Why is this 1/2 " drive by 1/2" 6pt socket so fat?
It's 1 1/8" wide and reads "10 Cornwell. USA
1/2-IS215"
I figure its an impact but its matt chrome or something and not black oxide.

I also think it has to do with strength because if I'm going up to 1/2 drive clearance is not usually the issue especially when I'm dealing with a 9/16 or smaller bolt.

The plating sort of looks like it could be cadmium. Cadmium plating tends to be a dull grey. Be careful if cleaning it because cadmium is toxic. It was used on some older tools in the 30s and 40s as well as for military use do to the dull non reflective surface. It beuing an older socket might also explain the thickness.

Wouldn't think it would be in 1/2" drive but aren't there extra strong sockets for working on dozer/tank treads?

It'd be cool if it was a military socket. I did a quick web search for the part number and didnt find anything. but maybe a parts list for vehicle kits would mention it.

It looks pretty old. Some old sockets are different designs than modern sockets.

I already have a heap of 1/2 " sockets but bought this anyway just in case it was kinda old.

That's the other reason I bought it. It makes my other sockets look wimpy .

Thanks.
I cleaned it with a hand wire brush and that's all it's gonna get. :)

None of the numbers you listed are active part numbers. Current 1/2 is P3216, 15/16 OD on drive end and 13/16 on working end. That's an old socket.

Cornwell could probably help, seeing as they're are private family owned company. Their records should be pretty good I would think.

It is an older socket, considering it is USA made Cornwell. It is also most likely an impact, because it is thicker. They put the taper on the end to help get in to slightly cramped spots. A lot of modern sockets have a similar taper, but with advancements in manufacturing processes, they can be thinner.

I have a 1" socket in 1" drive cornwell socket shaped like that, think it came from our old servohydraulic dept, (non military). Feels like a beast compared to an 1" socket in 1/2" drive.
Ive yet to use it tho, no 1" driver for me:sad:

I set my calipers to 13/16 and held them near the base of the socket .
It's quite a difference.

Maybe someone too all the black coating off??

Looking at it under a loupe I can't see any bit of black inside or out.

Yup,
Maybe worth a shot.

It's probably a impact I have a old Apex that's 5/16 1/2 drive that's shaped the same way and is extremely thick.

I've got a really old Cornwell 3/4 drive socket set and it's got that same dull grey finish. I believe they were Cad plated back then. Nothing to do with being military.
