Cornwell...Patent Applied For socket?

OK. This one is sort of tricky and definitely a first for me. I got a $10 deal on an old toolbox. Inside were some older sockets from Blackhawk, New Britain and two large Cornwell sockets with a funky internal part with geared spindles (my terminology). If anyone has any info on the purpose for this tool, I'd surely appreciate the education.

Thanks! That does appear to be it. Got one sized 7/16" and one at 1/2". I'm used to the Irwin type extractors so this is a pure joy.
