I bought a used Cornwell JR301 ratchet from ebay. There is a hole in the head of the ratchet. Looking at picture of other Cornwell ratchets on the internet, this appears to be common. Is that true?

In addition to it being used to oil the ratchet head it was used in the assembly process. A pin was inserted through the hole to hold the spring loaded ball in place until the pawl was installed.

Yup.
Later ones were filled and then chromed over.
As they age n get used a lot you can see the outline of the plug.

Yes, its sort of a generational thing...

1st version had the assembly/oil hole.
2nd version they plugged the hole.
Current version they removed the hole when they redid the ratchet molds.
