I have a 3/4" Cornwell ratchet and that is how it comes apart, the bottom unscrews. What drive is that? 1/2" and smaller Cornwells I have seen have a snap ring on the bottom. That must be really old because Cornwell never changes anything.

Those two holes are for a special tool,a ring cap wrench to unscrew that cap. That cap unscrews, the part number of the tool is SRW

Soak your ratchet in a can for about 1/2 hour, then if you have a bent nose pliers you can turn the ring to the left and it should break free. Sometimes a can of super cold spray also will work. (cold spay/lubricant).

If you are still having trouble take a pin punch and place it at a sharp angle using a lite tap should break the ring free; You can also soak it overnight.

When you open it up be sure and take a can of brake cleaner and spray everything to clean off all the old gunk. let everything dry lube it with some HF super lube ($4.99/tube) and put it back together, good for many more years to come.

Of special note if anything is broken send it to Cornwell and they will take very good care of you.

My favorite tool for this job is a pin spanner, but others will definitely work...

Stick the ratchet head first in a can of atf and check on it in 3 days. That model 710 reminds me of a story of a blonde that went into a parts store asking for a replacement 710 cap for her car.

Poor man's solution:

If you put an old pair of junk needle nose pliers in your vise, spread so the jaws fit into the holes of the retainer ring, place the ratchet face down, so the retainer ring is caught in the jaws of the pliers. Then, just turn the wrench counterclockwise, as if loosening a fastener...you will!

I did this to open an early Cornwell JR-30. Easy!

Don't use your best pliers.
