Went and looked at their website. First glance is that they seem even more expensive than Snap-on. Am I wrong in that snap judgement?

yes. Ever since snap-ons new year price increase they've become substantially more expensive than everyone else. Cornwell is by far the cheapest and for the most part every one of their hard line tools finds their way into the monthly flier which makes them even cheaper still.

Sets like wrenches, sockets, impacts etc.. you can save hundreds per purchase vs comparable snap-on.

okay, apples to apples comparison, or as close as i could get:

Cornwell CAT2150 3/8 composite impact wrench, per their online webcat: $269.65 (i got mine for 239.95 on special)

http://www.cornwelltools.com/webcat...2d-bluePOWER-3{47}8”-Super-Duty-Impact-Wrench

BluePoint AT370 3/8 composite impact wrench, per their online webcat: $250.00

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...roup_ID=675141&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

i know i know i know, thats a blue point, not a snap on. snap on doesnt have a composite 3/8 impact listed on their webcat, so here is the CLOSEST i can get other spec wise to the cornwell:

snap on MG325 3/8 magnesium impact wrench per their online webcat $409.99:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...roup_ID=681943&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

you can surf the spec sheets ive linked to, but the long and short of it is:

Cornwell, 500 ft lbs breakaway torque, made in taiwan. $269.69

BluePoint, 320 ft lbs maximum torque, made in taiwan. $250.00

Snap On, 425 ft. lbs. Bolt Breakaway Torque, made in USA. $409.99

so Cornwell bests snap-on and bluepoint on torque, is middle ground on price, and made in taiwan. at least for this tool.

my experience with it though, there was only one thing it couldnt break loose that i tried the cornwell on, and that was the 3 bolts that hold the lower passenger side ball joint onto the control arm of a newer kia that i was replacing the axle on. my buddy's snap on, similar to the one up there listed at 409, couldnt break them either. (to be fair, we tried the 1/2 versions of both too, and they couldnt do it either.)

Every company rebrands some charge more than others. Cornwell in my experiance is the lowest. Prime example is the rotobroach hole cutter kit. Snapon- http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=all&Group_ID=675224&store=snapon-store
Cornwell- http://www.cornwelltools.com/webcat/products.php?product=BE11090CW-%2d-Rotabroach-Cutter-Kit
Is the Blue Point name worth 65 bucks more for the exact same Blair Equipment rebrand and a blue plastic case? The differance I guess is Cornwell sells it under the Blair name and Snap On puts the Blue Point name on it.

i first started noticing things like that with matco and gearwrench.

gearwrench - (from napa) - 44.67

http://www.gearwrench.com/catalog/specialty_tools/serpentine_belt_tool/setdetails.jsp?part=3680

http://www.napaonline.com/catalog/catalogitemdetail.aspx?R=SER3680_0006403752

matco - 127.95

http://www.matcotools.com/catalog/product/MSBT15/SERPENTINE-BELT-WRENCH-SET/

the worst part is the matco set even says gearwrench on the documentation under the lid. is some engraving time really worth 3 times the cost?

I do love me some Snap On but if I had a Cornwell truck anywhere near me there'd be quite a few more of their tools in my toolbox. Their fine tooth ratchets are fantastic and I'm hoping to try some other Cornwell stuff the next time I get down to SC.

When I was a young wrench-turner, about a million years ago, I recall that we had three truck brands come into the Goodyear store where I worked. There was a Snap On, a Mac, and a Cornwell truck every week.

To the best of my memory, in those days Snap On and Cornwell were more expensive, and a little more "polished", in the sense that their tools were much more detailed in appearance. But as I recall, Cornwell was the most expensive at that time. I bought a lot of Mac and Snap On off of the trucks, but usually came off of the Cornwell truck without spending any $$$. Today, I eagerly seek Cornwell tools at flea markets, yard sales, auctions, and estate sales, because the "average Joe" vendor/bidder will often set values HIGHER for Craftsman tools than they will for Cornwell (or Billings, Blackhawk, Proto, Plomb, New Britain, etc). Indeed, many of them never even heard of Cornwell!! :wtf: So with Cornwell I can get a used truck-quality tool for less than used C-man prices. Nice!

You hit the nail on the head when you said no one put value on Cornwell. Eveyone here in California things Craftsman are much better and more expensive. You can find them cheap out here but don't try to sell them. I can't give them away and I have a tray full of them in my second hand store and never sell a one of them. I am going to pull them. I have 1, 2,3 and $5 boxes and I end up putting them in with the C man for the same price on the loose ones. Great tools. I would never buy tools at rull price so I never worry about warranty. I get sets, use them and then resell them and buy others.

I have said it before but I think Cornwell tools are the best tools no one has heard of. The ratchets are great, even the 30t ones. They are smooth as silk and strong as hell. Same with the jr72 and all the flex heads that came out. Strong as hell and smooth as silk. Even though the pliers are channellock but with orange grips they are not that much more than the blue handled counterparts. One example is the 909 crimp tool. The channellock is like 23 bucks and the Cornwell is like 30. Just stay away from the cpl part number pliers. Cheap imported junk.

junk or not, if they warranty it, whats the difference? i hate a broken tool as much as the next guy, but even with my el-cheapo harbor freight stuff, its all in how you keep it. i see guys ABUSING their mac, matco, snap on, and cornwell. i just keep babying my harbor freight. they warranty out a handful of tools every week from the trucks, and my stuff just keeps going.

take care of your tools, and they'll take care of you, regardless of brand.

Its annoying when needle nose pliers dont grip when you need them to or diagonal cutters that well dont cut. I really do not care much about warranty at all. I care more about the quality of the tool to start out with. The warranty is a bonus. If the tool is junk to start then what good is a warranty? They get replaced with the same junk you started with. I cant tell you the last time I warrantied a tool. Why? I guess I dont abuse them and I buy quality to start. I think the lifetime warranty is the biggest gimmick on the market. Not useless by any means but very overrated

As far as ratchets go, I think cornwell makes a sweet one that will take a beating. I own only one 1/4" but would love to get ahold of more. My boss has a few that I used frequently when I first started out. I definitely didnt go easy on them in that time and he is way worse. My personal favorite ratchets are snap-on, and I like proto ratchets but dont find their bulk to be doable as a professional. Sorry to ramble, thats just my input. For me there is I think 1 ******** dealer left in the state so its kind of like chasing a unicorn as they say :p

my only complaint about cornwell, but it goes for all the tool trucks really.

this is what around $600 dollars off the cornwell truck looks like:

20130509115435.jpg

3/8 impact, 1/2 impact, covers for both impacts, a 21mm wheel socket, an impact 3/8 to 1/2 adapter, and a chrome 3/8 to 1/2 adapter. the air tool oil and fittings were free...:lol_hitti

Stocker, there are a few guys on here who really like Cornwell. If you have that tray full, why not list 'em here? I have a bunch of used Cornwell myself, but I haven't sorted them out yet to see what I need to fill out sets (that's always the hardest part of buying used tools...trying to fill out complete sets one tool at a time, as found). So I would be happy to swap Craftsman tools even-up, tool-for-tool, once I know what I need to fill Cornwell sets. Just a thought...
