I am not suggesting buying tools on a credit card if you can not pay it off. I suggest getting out of the current situation where a person has a debt and and is buying time to pay it off. It would be crazy to buy more tools if you can not pay for one in this situation...

Credit cards: You can play the game as long as you are well organized, can save money and can be consistent with paying them off....

I totally agree except for one thing. It's probably more like than not that the new credit card is not used simply to pay off that item and then put in a drawer. It's more likely to be use to pay off that item, and take his gf out to dinner and put gas in his car and buy her a birthday gift, all while paying only the minimum payment. You are correct that it works well if your consistent and pay them off. I run most of my purchases thorough a credit card that gets nice rewards and carry a balance if about 100 dollars a month because no balance drops my credit score by 25 points, as does carrying a ballance in the 1000 range. (Because some statisticians model has some off quirks in it)

But the reality is, a young guy having financial troubles is probably NOT consistent, probably WONT pay them off and probably isn't even honest enough with him self to be able to know that. Perhaps someday. But if he was that guy who had it all under control, we wouldn't need to ask for advice.

Who cares? If he decided to bail - his problem. At least it's not the usual: "Found X. Looks cool! How much should I sell it for?"

May be there will be another person in similar situation who would benefit from reading this.

A lot of things happen in this life for a reason. Sometimes it's just not clear, sometimes it's not for our experience/benefit.

Hmm, sounds like my "buying tools which I do not need now might happen for a reason" : )
Played out well today though - several decades ago I bought a cheap battery terminal removal tool(first car, bought the cleaning tool and this removal tool without realizing that it would not be used on most of my cars...). Postpone decades: I managed to break corroded battery terminal on my 17 year old car. Replaced it with one from the Autozone. Large and tight one - had to help it go down with a slight tap of a hammer! Well, I needed to remove it today - guess what happened to be the perfect tool which was laying in my toolbox forever?
