seems like a good setup to start out with, a couple of the guys at work have alot of cornwell tools and they have never had a problem with them! Depending on where your going to school you should check out the snap on SEP program and also matco offers great discounts for students (all are available via there websites). Im not sure if cornwell offers a student discount and i know there prices are very similar to snap on and matco so they may be worth checking out. Snap on also offers quite a few very complete starter sets for that kind of money. Im currently in school and taking full advantage of the discount programs.

When I took Automotives in high school (40+ years ago) Sears offered the students a Craftsman toolbox full of ratchet/socket sets, wrench sets, etc. for $50.00 which I took advantage of. I still have a good portion of those tools today, even had the ratchets repaired under the lifetime warranty after 25 years or so, got my moneys worth.

Short answer is do it, you will not be sorry years from now.

there are MANY quality tools out there, much cheaper than tool truck prices. I have been "filling in corners" and replacing broken or missing items by ordering from McMaster-Carr, www.mcmaster.com.

The school should have a list of the basic tools you need to start, as in wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, driver bits, ball peen hammer...

Interesting ive never heard of that place before, How are there tools quality wise and do you use them professionally, like everyday use and abuse?

Nkid,
One thing that you need to look into is how the Cornwell dealer situation is in your area. We used to have a Cornwell truck around here but I have not seen one in many years. If you are going to be doing this for a living, you need to have fast support if you need a tool replaced or repaired etc. Ask a few shops and see what they say. I basically use Craftsman and Snap On. The Snap On dealer is at our shop like clockwork every Monday even though I really buy very little from him compared to a regular repair shop. Sears is almost walking distance :) I have had a set of Sears Pro wrenches for almost 15 years and have not had to replace a single one. Most of my sockets are Snap On as they get used ( abused ?) a lot more than the wrenches.
