Corrosion ? on Baldor Grinder

Picked up this 712 (1/2 horse, 7") off of CL yesterday. Never been used. The wheels are clean and untouched. My question is on what looks like corrosion that you'd see on battery terminals, the white stuff. It brushes off easily with a little brass brush. There's more on the right side than the left.

Galvanic reaction?? Chorline or other chemicals near by??

I was worried that it might have some more serious issues, so I opened up the bottom and it's pretty clean in there. You can see that the right side mounting hole has some rust, but nothing too crazy.

It runs nicely. And takes a bit to stop.

Anybody with a cheap source for the tool rests and eye shields?

As everybody says, you'll find more once you buy one. I picked up a 1/3 horse Wissota a couple of weeks ago. Needs most of the accesories too. The guy I bought the Baldor from had the same Wissota for sale too. It was absolutely pristine. All of the accessories were still wrapped in brown paper.

If it takes a long to time to stop it means the bearings are dry.

If the bearings were dry and needed lube wouldn't it stop quickly due to the friction?
I've always been told that if a grinder spins for a long time after shutoff that means its quality and has good bearings.

I met him in Katy (25 miles west of Houston). Don't know where he was keeping everything.

It's not a big deal b/c it runs nice and smooth. I'm just curious.

Buck - can you point me to your eye shields.

I'd like to see some facts supporting the above???

Every baldor I've ever seen including the 3 I have and the brand new ones at the fab shows will spin for what seems like an eternity after being shut down.

To me, this is a sign of their quality! Top notch bearings, and American craftsmanship!

Nobody beats Baldor in my book!

eBay for eye shields, expect to pay a little more than you did for grinder to get two nice lighted eye shields, but well worth it.

I've seen corrosion like that before. I don't believe it is a big deal, but I have no idea what causes it. I would wire brush it and keep gettin' it.

Brush it off and use a oily rag to wipe it down.
The oil will seep into the cracks and stop anythig from going on in there.

He just bought all of that stuff from a military auction. I bet he paid one tenth the asking price, maybe even less.

I think I was a wee bit too matter-of-fact with my response. My apologies. I was mostly going off of internet hearsay, but also a bit of my own experience with rebuilding electrical motors. The bearings with less grease in them are easier to turn. A bearing with no grease in it at all will spin for ages, but it won't last long.

There's some interesting debate on the topic here:

Edit: I should add: bearings (even good ones) are cheap, no harm in dropping new ones in while the grinder is down for maintenance.
