About how much of a diff is it in total cost between building a 24x24 garage or a 30x30 garage? Im just looking to build a basic stick built garage. Nothing special. I just wanna know if the extra 6 feet is going to make a huge cost diff.

Are you building it yourself or having it built. If you are doing it yourself the material will be pretty close to exactly the increase in square footage as a percentage, a little under probably, where having it built won't be quite as much increase because the labor cost will be under percentage wise as well.

The square footage is just over 50% more in a 30x30 than a 24x24. So that is a ball park. I'd maybe figure only an increase in 40% if having it built by a crew.

FYI, I'd do a 28x32 over a 30x30 so you get even 4' increments on both sides vice neither. That will save a little in time and waste and is nearly the exact square footage.

I just built a 26x28 in Maine for around 14K in materials. Probably would've been close to 30K to pay a contractor.

Its a square foot thing.

30x30= 900 sq. ft.

24x24= 576 sq. ft.

The larger one is slightly over 50% greater than the small one, so expect your cost to follow accordingly.

Not necessarily true.

Things based on area like slab, roofing, finished ceilng are going up by about 50% but the building perimeter is only going up by 25%. So things like the foundation, wall construction, trim, etc. are going to be substantially less than the generalized 50% upcharge.

I will be building this myself and with a few friends. I may have a few small things subbed out.. MAYBE. I just dont want to put up a 24x24 and then kick myself in the **** because the 30x30 would have only costed me maybe $1k-2K more. I just want the most for my money.

JCByrd24, doing the 28x32 is a great idea and I will conaider it but I think I will be really really close to the 10ft limit I have on the neighbors proporty line.

Just my opinion your going to kick yourself for not going bigger even if you have to wait and save some more. I started out about 5 yrs ago going to build a 24X26 and after just driving by and seeing garages I would stop and ask what size it was and if I could just look in it everyone seemed small and every person told me build it bigger. My wifes dad has a 24x26 and with two cars in it and tool boxes and jacks etc there is not enough room. I ended up saving some more and I am almost finished with my 30x40x12 it cost alot more but I know now I would not have been happy with a 24x26. As far as how much extra it is going to cost you will depend on alot of factors material used and other things but I would give you a wide range figure of $2000-$4000 extra If you do like me and look for deals hear and there you can probally do it for $2000 maybe less especially if you are going to do the floor yourself.

My last house I built a 40x40, everybody including my wife thought I was crazy and didn't need anything that big. Within 5 yrs it was packed with "stuff" 5 cars, tools, kids toys, ect ect. Always build as big as you can afford to.
At my new house I was restricted to 1000sq ft garage:( so I will have to live with my new 24x42:)
Most everything you should be able to figure out by the additional sq ft, stuff like trusses will cost more because of the greater span.

If you are building it yourself you probablt won't have $2k more in materials. Let's figure an 8' high wall for simplicity and 4' longer on the length of the garage. And figure 24' wide using a standard in stock truss. You will have the following materials to lengthen the 24' long garage to 28':

6 studs
2 pcs of 4' x 8' sheeting for the side walls
4 boards 4' longer for the top plates
2 boards 4' longer for the bottom plate
Approx. 8 more sheeting boards for the roof
Approx 1 more square of shingles
And approx. 1 1/3 yards more of concrete
Then depending on the foundation type, you will have the extra footer cement, extra cement blocks if you go that route (BTW...3 concrete blocks long = 4'....3 concrete blocks high = 2') easy to remember.

So depending on your lumber prices that you are paying and doing it yourself, you can kind of roughly figure what the cost will be.
