Cost For Power Run

I did a search and it looks like a lot of guys are asking for recommendations on parts and setup so they can install some power. I would have a contractor do everything so I don't die :) We're looking at homes in the Lake Lanier area and if we can't find a place with an existing shop, we'd build a new 40 x 60 shop that sits maybe 200-300 feet behind the house. Any rough ideas what it would cost to run power to the shop (not throughout the shop initially, just a panel at the shop) I would want enough power for lights, compressor, welder, maybe a lift. My current house has a separate meter which is convenient because I run a small business out of the shop and it's nice to be able to keep the shop power separate from the house.

This varies wildly. If the lot has power, it's one thing. If it doesn't and you have to coordinate with the POC, there's a whole step in front of that.

Here, for a 250' run of 200A to a residence, it was about $3500 - just to drop the line in. Note, it's hard to dig here (we have to use a rock saw).

Once you select a location, figure out if it has utilities, what you're asking for is installation of a main panel, probably 200a (100 would be fine also), on new building.. My guess, $5000 range with utilities on site, turn key.. No wiring in circuits from that panel.

Note, sometimes dropping in a separate power meter triggers "fixed" costs - it does here. And 100A off a residence would be more than enough power. You can keep track of the draw on that circuit if you wanted to write off the business expense.

Our local electric just quoted 12k to run 3 phase to the shop so I could get off the phase converters. it's probably 600'. I already have two poles carrying my service.

Theres no way people on the internet can answer this with any kind of legitimacy. every area will have different costs.

Will the PoCo run the power to the building?

Does the PoCo require a contractor to run power from the pole to the building?

Will the PoCo set a meter near the pole and require the customer to run power to the building?

theres just too many variables here.... Call your PoCo and speak with them... some people on the internet are just gonna be guessing

Things to asked when you call:

Monthly cost for the meter ? Likely a minimum fee each month likely $15-$40.
Can I have two meters on the same property? Some locations it’s NO !
Cost to up grade the home to 400 amps to split and send 200 amp to the shop if needed ?
Georgia are you going to want or need AC in the shop ?

If you are building a new home, get the main line from the power company sized to handle the additional needs of the shop and just run a sub from the home. Every power company is different on what they charge for. I had to pay for the underground line and transformer install from the power line to my new construction.

I would recommend running Power from the House.
Get a Power Meter (Kilowatt Meter) off from Amazon.
Take monthly Usage Readings the same as your Utility Provider.

+1 on that..
Save the money every month buy not having a second meter to pay for.
the Kilowatt Meter will pay for its self in a few years.

Win - Win IMO

In NE metro ATL - Ga Power ran a dedicated 200 amp service to my shop at $0 cost. It is on a separate meter which bills out to around $20 min each month. It's a lot cheaper to pay $20 min each month for 10 years than paying $5k to run power out of the house basement into a trench for 200 ft to the shop. There is already a power line on the back edge of my property though - so Ga Power dropped a new pole, added a new transformer and ran the lines to the masthead/meter on the shop.

Utility here has the same sort of program. With new service, they give a certain amount (maybe $1500) towards the implementation of that service... Anything over, you pay for. I've just never had a property that had a power install short of $1500...

Good to hear. I'm gonna call up Ga Power Monday to get prices on 200 amp service ran to my new building. I have a pole about about 40-50 yards away just need cost of under ground verses overhead from them.

here Xcel charges $6/ft min to convert to underground
+$1500min for winter work(oct-mar)

If you'd have to set another pole the UG feed may lean more favorable to the wallet as a pole+ setting gets costly.

Xcel has a builders line for these type of calls/ emails.
