Hoping you guys can help me out...just moved into an older home...the detached garage floor is a complete mess..chipping everywhere, uneven, big hole in the corner etc..had a local guy come by to take a look at it...he suggested replacing the slab if I'm planning to live here for the rest of my life..which i do..he would dig down 6" and then pour a whole new concrete slab..he quoted me $4000 for the job...it's a 2 car garage about 400sq ft. Is this a decent price? I have no clue

My son and I did all of the grunt work. The concrete was $1400. That included renting a pump as the truck couldn't get close enough. Mine is also 400sf.

So are you saying he wants to pour a 10" slab? If he is sawcuting, breaking, removing, digging down and repouring for 10 a foot I would say that's a good deal at least in so cal it would be.

I just did my garage this past month. Learned a lot. First I don't think he's going to pour 10" slab. Nobody does that. Likely 4" with supported wire mesh or 6" with rebar, and the rest will be a base material of some sort. Crushed recycled concrete/rock with clean sand/dirt is what we used here in southern california. That cost sounds correct. About $1000-$1400 for the concrete alone. About $1400 to take out the old stuff. I thought that was expensive so I tried to do it myself and only saved $400 in the end. My 20x20 garage totaled in at $3600. The floor had a low spot so it wasn't completely flat. I had them pour it level as I chose not to do the slope of 1" every 10'. Mine was also troweled finished not machine finished.

If I had to do it again I would repair it, use leveler, tile over and move on. Pictures of the problem floor would be helpful. Mine was very bad and after I took it out saw that it was 2.5-3.5" thick.

I agree with cb racer that a 10" slab is probably not what he is proposing. We pour 10" in parking lots where trash trucks drive. If I fact he has a 10" slab figured you can reduce that and save some money. 4" with bar would be plenty for a conventional garage slab as long as the sub grade is tight.
