Last time I applied for a permit in my town was 2008 when I built a new patio. Fee was something like a $25 application fee, $25 permit fee for first $1000 of estimated construction costs + $6 for every additional $1000 of estimated construction. No backup information required at that time.

They want 45 for electric permit. Then have to have hvac permit. Water permit. They want everything. This is after I already paid for a variance

Building permits here are 1.2% of the estimated total cost of the building. A separate permit is required for a septic and is usually $750.

The permit to build my garage was $375. It would have been the same if I had built a house. All the same inspections need to be made on the garage as a house. I paid an additional $25 for a septic permit because of the bathroom.

Where I live it's about 1% of estimated cost which I think is somewhat unfair. If I build a really expensive garage my permit costs more than a bare bones garage even if they're the same size.

The local school district paid over $300,000 for permits on two elementary schools.

$25 for anything under 1000 sq ft. Once over that, it jumps to $125, plus all kind of inspections during construction. I kept mine under 1000.

I've pulled permits in a lot of different AHJ's, and there are a lot of different rate structures.

Some are percentage of project cost, or
fixed rate, or
based of square footage, or
a charge for every inspection necessary

Anywhere from $50 to a couple thousand for a garage wouldn't surprise me.

I'm a bit north of $4,500 for all of mine - detached garage - no interior finish, no insulation, but big.

Friend built a 5k sqft HOME in a small community east of here and his total for permits was under $900.

popped the top on my ranch in 2005 and the fees were just over $12,000

a new neighbor built on a vacant lot a few doors down about the same time and the fees were $79,000.

fees are complicated in what they include, but wow. and i did it----wow.

Surely the guy received more than a permit for $79000 in Boulder. Did that fee include water and sewer assessments? Tap and installation fees? Road paving fees? Driveway approach? Hydrant and possibly storm water costs?

We run into fees like that when we are building in newer Townships, but most are related to commercial type developments.

1800 sq. ft. stick built shop.... $385. That's a zone permit, build permit, elec. permit, and a down spout permit.

sounds like the government of Boulder, CO is sending a clear message to anyone that wants to build a building there, and that message is:

"we don't want any more buildings here or people working construction jobs"

I paid about $215 in fees to put up my 30x40 pole barn last winter. Im not sure how they determine the cost, but i know the app fee was pretty high, over $100.
