Cost of slab?

Looking to get a 34 x 34 broom finish outside slab and 4 x 8 section by the man door. They priced concrete and labor separately so just the forms and finishing is $2.50 a sq ft which is $2970. Concrete includes conveyor truck so basically no wheelbarrow work and base prep is done and not included.

I realize this is highly regional but wondering if this is reasonable.

I just paid $14 a foot for exposed aggregate including everything. And was quoted $9-11 a foot for a pad to put a shed on. $2.50 seems very reasonable to me.

Assuming 4" thickness, you will need a little over 15 yards. If you go 6", then over 21".

You didn't say if you need a footing....and being where you are, I'm surprised.

Anyway, in my area, it's about $100/yard....or around $1K per truck. Anything less than half a truck, and you will still pay for half a truck.

"Forms and finishing" is kind of an open description....does this include ground prep? Sand? vapor barrier? Rebar?

My personal opinion....that sounds almost too cheap....

To give you an idea...my garage foundation back in 2008 cost me about $10K....which included a 2' deep footing 16" wide....it took about 20 yards of concrete for a 20x25 foundation.

This is the apron. No foundation, concrete is paid separately, ground prep is separate. concrete delivery is separate and via conveyor truck to minimize having to move concrete around by hand is minimized. Slabs are beside a garage. As it is outside I see no reason for a vapor barrier but could be wrong.

So "forms and finishing" seemed pretty descriptive to me. They need to place outside forms on already prepped gravel base. Then guide the conveyor truck where to place concrete to get it somewhat even. Then level it out and finish. Then saw cut and remove forms.

Total with concrete is $5670 or $4.77 a sq ft. Slab is 5" 4500 PSI.

Location plays a role in everything. We just had 4200 sq ft of parking and 400 of power trowel finished office slab done and I paid $1 psf for labor and supplied materials and paid for the Concrete

Trying to understand the wire mesh/rebar. From what I have read this doesn't really add any strength and just keeps cracks from separating. Didn't do it on the inside slab but it is confined by the foundation so the cracks can't separate, at least not very much. Outside they could. The slab will be attached to the building with some rebar to the foundation beside the OHD openings so that isn't going anywhere. But the control cracks could separate and the apron will be on a slight slope. As I recall my existing slab apron on the house doesn't have any mesh or rebar and is sloped a bit. It hasn't separated - maybe I have been lucky.

Some contractors here just lay down the mess and say they will pull it up. I doubt it gets pulled up much or evenly but if it is just for controlling crack separation perhaps that is enough? If put on chairs it gets mashed down walking on it. What's the best solution?

You are right to doubt the ability of your finisher to lift the mesh into position during the placement. It rarely work. There are any number of products available to support wire mesh and rear from simple concrete brick to concrete dobies to various metal and plastic products.

As such, steel reinforcing is almost a necessity for a slab of any size. Your aprons are presumably fairly small and might be Ok but why take the chance. The cost to add a few bars or some mesh would be minimal

Seems like rebar would be less likely to be pushed down, bent, moved than mesh. I have seen people put rebar on 2 or 3 ft spacing. Is that needed or overkill. Slab will likely have control joints every 10 ft or so. Seems like 2 rebars per section would be plenty but what do I know? What would you recommend?

I paid $0.60 a sq. ft. for a 3,000 sq. ft slab. This was placement and finishing/power troweling. My son and I did all forms, stone placement, vapor barrier and steel placement.

local guys said $200-$250 for my 16'x22' and I'll be doing everything ahead of time including finishing the excavation, forms, compacting, electrical conduit, gravel, compacting again, vapor barrier, steel mesh & rebar. They only have to pull, screed, float and power trowel. Getting 6 yards dumped in the form @2500lb per buggy trip should be fun from the truck 220' away. I hope it'll haul **** back to the truck.

I did some checking around here and $1.50/sq ft is about as cheap as possible for reputable work. Paying slightly more for for them to spread gravel, compact and set forms. I am paying for concrete and steel.

I just paid $5.91 a sq. foot for my 30x40 5" slab, and apron (23x3). I never lifted a finger, so that included concrete, finishing, forming, a single drain, saw cuts, and 3 tri-axles of gravel, along with some miscellaneous dirt work around the building. Located in western, PA.
