Costco - Mr Cool DYI

Think I am going to trash my electric heaters and go with this, plus side is I get AC, and it will be basically free with the solar panels in the winter.

What height is the best to mount the head unit? It says 7.5' min but would it be better higher? I have 12' walls So by their measurements I can mount them from 7.5' to 10.5'.

I could also mount them higher as the center of my building is 16' tall using coffer trusses. Wondering if it would be ok to mount them at the 12' mark there or if that is too high?



What size if your garage?

It's around 900 sq ft. Most of the ceiling is insulated with rooms above the garage, just a couple small sections I haven't insulated yet. Garage doors are also factory insulated. One long exterior wall has no insulation at all (yet) and this still seems to do a very good job.

For the 24k, Costco price is $1,300 plus $100 for shipping

It's $60 to join Costco for a year. Even if you do not have a warehouse close buys, they often have great deals (like the Mr Cool) on their website. Even if Ingrams price matched Costco, they are never going to match the level of customer service you get from Costco

These are substantially lower selling prices than what was posted a few weeks ago. This would evidently be due to what has been negotiated between costco and the mrcool importer.

If you're buying one from costco, what exactly is your concern?

No, I am not going to buy a Mr Cool from Costco. I have a Mitsubishi Mr Slim that I installed myself, but if I was currently in the market for a mini-split, like the Mr Cool units, I would definitely buy one from Costco, even if I had to pay slightly more, because their customer service is worth it

Purchased a 24k unit for my 50x40 garage. I am wanting to see if it will hold it at 80 before I add a 18k unit to go with it for fast cool downs.

For general use I think 24k would work in my 1700sf -- let us know how that works for you.

I have a 2400 sq ft insulated metal building as my shop. Roll-up doors, they're not insulated. I bought the largest window unit I could find (24,500 btu, $600), cut a hole in the wall about 7' up, and bolted it in. It's 220v. My IR thermometer shows temps on the rollup doors of over 100 degrees when the sun is on them, but the insulated walls are below 90. Floor temps near the unit are just below 85 on a 100 + day. With two 10x10 rollup doors and one 12x14 door, if I could find a way to insulate them I think it would make a huge difference.

I have the temp set on 75, but in this central Texas heat it won't get down that cool, but it will keep the area in front of and around it at least 15 degrees cooler and less humid than it is outside. My main work area is primarily one large corner of the building (tool chest, workbenches, worktable), that's where I am most of the time, so that's where the unit is.

I have a large drum fan that I use to help circulate the cool air around the shop, so that helps.

It's not as comfy as being inside the house, but it's a hell of a lot better than no A/C at all.

Will do. With R-19 in the walls and R-30 in the ceiling I feel like it should hold 80 easy. 80 and low humidity would be ALOT better than 92-95 that it is with nothing going on in there. I was running wiring in the attic over the weekend, was a balmy 130-140 in there from 2-5. bottom side of the insulation was 101-104 at the ceiling and 95 at eye level with the doors open.

I spend 90% of my time in one 16 foot wide stall, so I am putting the head unit on the wall above the tool chest and work bench.

I see what you mean. I see that the “Advantage” line, is the low end a the least amount of warranty that Mr Cool has. Not such a great deal, but would be if the warranty was there. I’d like to know if the DIY & the Advantage line have the same compressor. I can’t find anything on MrCools website.

AFAIK, yes, they're the same unit, but advantage has shorter warranty and not DIY lineset.
You will need a conventional vac, test, and startup. Oasis is the higher-seer model.

I figured $250-$450 for a HVAC guy, or buy a pump and gauge set and hope, so $500 or so more for the DIY with no hassle warranty seemed like a good trade off.

All of the other units and brands are really fussy about pro install and warranty coverage. I found a couple of guys that would do a start up and document it for warranty, but seemed like a hassle for me, at very similar overall cost.

My two have been running pretty much 24/7 for the past month and are nothing short of fantastic.
