COSTCO Tool Deal

Ok its only Crescent. A 39-piece ratchet set with both metric and SAE sockets. Ratchet looks like my Snap-on. Any way $6.97 each.

Be careful, you may snap a socket for rachet gear with the very first pull.....

I wouldn't worry too much -- it's good homeowner quality stuff. I bought some Crescent Gearwrenches from COSTCO for my road box, and have been beating the heck out of them for seven years -- no problems.

Just don't confuse the fact that because they look like SNAP-ON, they'll perform like SNAP-ON. Many Taiwanese manufacturers copy the classic SNAP-ON look.

At that price I would buy them for a gift or something. I've seen a bunch of used Crescent stuff so apparently people do use them and they do in fact work ok.

.

That's kind of my take. They look fine for throwing in the trunk or a carpentry toolbox.

Just for the sake of argument, why would a set of GearWrench(tm) sockets be a bit better than a $7.00 set of Crescent (I was going to say 'Clescent', but just stopped myself in the nick of time) tools?

At that price they are great for the kids tool box. They are cheaper than toys. On 2nd thought , If your kid gets into stuff he/she may take apart something you don't want apart.

Actually, a guy at our company has a crescent (stanley made I think) socket set with that very same ratchet. It happens to be VERY smooth, and appears to have a dual pawl setup like a snap on 80 series ratchet, yet I think it was purchased months before the snap on 80's came out.

I will bet it is more like a proto design!! Those have dual pawls and that is one very old design.

Yes, a undoubtedly great buy for $7.

No, I can't bring myself to own an offshore tool with the whored-out Crescent brand name on it. That'd be like seeing my classy old Aunt Evelyn in a miniskirt trolling Sprague Avenue.

Maybe, if they just put "Globemaster" on it . . . .

The flex head Crescent gearwrenches I have from that same period flex out on the open end like nobody's business. Not good. They're flex though so I still keep them around for when I get in a jam, not in the main box though.

For 7 bucks, it's a great deal for the "upstairs" tool kit. I need to get to Costco this week anyway...

From what I remember, it's made in Taiwan. I've seen several crescent ratchets at the local flea market and the action seems pretty nice. For the price, it's hard to pass up, especially if you're just planning to leave it in your car.

Another way to look at it:

For $7 I could have yet another set of tools I don't like and won't use.

That is a good point. I have a many of times been subject to the therory of "it was such a good deal, how could I not buy it". Occasionally I've have had buyers remorse from overbuying stuff like this too I'm sure. If one good; three is better right?

If you need it one time it paid for itself. Not the best, not horrible either. I have a pair of Cresnt wire cutters and needle nose in my guitar bag that have cut and pulled several thousand guitar strings and still work great. I also have a set of taskforce 1.3 drive sockets in the same bag along with a few Cresent brand wrenches and screwdrivers. I carry cheap tools in gig bag because people will steal you **** while you are on stage. I wouldn't want to tear an engine down with it but for putting a bike or swingset or something together they would be fine. I've used worse

Ah, the voice of reason.....:) Though if these are still at Costco, it's a better deal that what I've seen at Horror Freight, and I could find a use for it as a "shop set," that I don't have to worry about.
