Costco makes what are called "bulk buys" which means special production runs because they order a lot at one time and get the best pricing. Things like tool boxes are really more like "seasonal" items and not the sort of thing that they want to keep on the shelf in inventory. They do this with furniture, too. They get it in and get it out quickly. Flooring space is extremely expensive and they cannot afford to keep inventory for slow moving items. Toilet paper, Coca-Cola and wine is OK but sofas and tool boxes are not. They actually do this with TVs but you would never notice because they always have so many on display. The models change continuously and you would be hard pressed to find the same model in stock 3-6 months later. It's a very short product life-cycle and they have to keep the inventory moving.

This is totally a bean-counter process. Check this out. Home Depot does the same thing with snow removal equipment and A/C units.

Why doesn't Costco have consistency with carrying ToolBoxes? Seems like they could really sell a lot of units, if they kept inventory.

I'll buy one if they have it at our Costco. Their return policy is the very best, period. Only question I have is the drawers and how well they slide. And, if the door is a cheapie or not. I know Sams has one and it's a piece of crep.

PLEASE put the "ITEM NUMBER" up so we can enquire regarding inventory and price.

Don't have the item number, but I have looked at several of these puppies. Mixed feelings. The first two the drawers didn't feel that great.
Then I was in the Rancho Cucamonga store and the slides on their box felt just fine.
You know a lot of boxes get tweaked and torqued in shipping. Inspect any box you buy closely. That goes for any make of box.

That's the model all of the warehouse stores operate by. They maintain inventory of basic items (milk for example). Everything else comes in and disappears, never to be seen again. So if you really like it, grab it then, as it may never be stocked again.

I think this model does miss out on a lot of word of mouth/repeat business. By the time the word spreads about a deal, the inventory is gone. But Sams Club and BJs operate the same way. Frustrating for sure.

After all the quibbling about whether to get one of these Costco boxes, or the Harbor Freight one, I ended up picking up a four year old Snap On roller cabinet and top box pair off Craigs List for about the same money (if you add a top box).

So I would encourage folks to watch Craigs List and even ebay (local pickup) for possible deals. They are out there.

The time you spend looking for good deals is sometimes so much, you may as well just have gone out and bought it. That's the way I feel.

Two sides to that. Yes, bargain hunting can cost more in time than you save.

Other side; about one person in five LOVES to bargain hunt.

I'm one, but I have a lot of friends that would rather be fondled at the airport than go to three stores looking for the best deal on a tool.

Hey guys, wake up. The item number is on that big white sign above the toolbox in the pic in the original post on this thread. Oh, and it doesn't come up at Costo.com.

All I have to say is I have a 41 inch top and bottom Hammerhead stainless steel box from Costco, that I have had for 7 years and it has been great! I really love it I don't think there is a better bang for your buck out there. The overall finish is perfect, the ball bearing slides work great it comes with pre-cut drawer liners and it's just overall a great toolbox especially for the price. But I don't know if Costco still carries the Hammerhead series box's or not I have seen some of the newer Costco box's and they are not the same quality as the one I bought.

+1 Bargain hunting is an acquired taste. You either like doing it, or you don't. I look for bargains every day, and I sell a fair amount of stuff on both C/L and ebay.

If you are into the hunt, finding a score at a garage sale or thrift store is pretty neat. For those interested in doing it, I would recommend you pick an area where you have some expertise (or develop an area of expertise). The market will tell you whether you are a good picker or not.

I am retired, and look for deals pretty much every day.

And when you are on a limited budget (I am), finding a deal is a great way to get some really good stuff at the cost of crappy stuff.

+1 I have a lot of friends that are amazed by the deals I find, but have zero interest in putting the time and effort into scoring deals themselves. I drove two hours one way to get that Snap On tool box. Some people would think spending four hours of time, plus gas, to get a deal on a tool box is crazy, but others would gladly spend five hours of time, and $50 in cash, hitting a little white ball with a stick, into a small hole in the ground. To each their own (my dad was an avid golfer). I have nothing against golf, my lack of skill just made it frustrating.

I have the same set up. The story is Hammerhead had CSPS build the boxes for them, but then started making a cheap knock off version under their own label. If you go to the old Hammerhead website, those boxes we got for about $700 were advertised for damn near $3500 a year later. If you weigh a Hammerhead against a CSPS set up there's at least 100lb weight difference.

At my Costco in California they have this red toolbox by CSPS. It is about 50 inches and pretty nice with a maple top. Anyone see that one? It is about $450. Nice, although I dont have space/want another chest in my own garage.

By the way, my DAD is ********* about costco. He sends me this e-mail:

Costco secret codes. If it ends in .97 it's on "sale". If there is an asterisk in the upper right hand corner of the price tag it's a one-time deal that won't be coming back.

Heres a link: tell me what you think because I cant open it up on my work computer.

Im guessing it is an 18 inch box. I have one of the first csps boxes and then got a SO Classic 78, and I will never own a cheap tool box again.

I get that lecture from my wife. I bought it anyway. :)

1) It's nice for the price. 2) The drawer slides have the slide latches that are kind of annoying. 3) The bearing don't feel as smooth as the old CSPS stainless rollaways they sold several years ago (I have one of those too). 4) Still glad I bought it.

Nice move Daedalus. I can only dream of having such a toolbox right now. However I will look at it today when I go to Costco to get my free samples...

Did anyone ever think about if they tried real hard, they could live off of Costco food samples? I mean theyre free, and you can get as many as you want and no one says anything if you pig out.

Sometimes I make a few circuits around Costco to get my samples. I wonder what they are serving up today...:rocker:

The box is decent for the price but the drawers are very thin. I lucked out last summer and scooped up two 72" SS units at a blow out price of $499.00 each.

The going price was $1200.** for both top and bottom units. One was a scratch and dent, the other was the demo floor model.

Three guys went toe to toe to get the last two units . . . I walked right by all three and proceeded to direct the Costco workers to get the fork lift in there.

They stopped and looked at me, all the while I just smiled and waved the receipt in the air indicating the time and date.

Pissed off doesn't even come close to describing the looks I got from them . . . :bounce: :lol_hitti

You win some, you lose some . . . :spit:

I've had this box for a few years now. It's OK, but I can't give it a strong recommendation. The drawers are shallow, as noted. The cabinet on the right would be a heck of a lot more useful as drawer space. The friction catches for the drawers seem to be too tight or too loose, and the handles on the drawers are not easy to grab (and are almost impossible with leather gloves on). It's held up fine in use, so seems made pretty well for what it is.

The "recall" notice about the sharp edge on the cabinet came to me about six months ago, and I requested the part through the web link provided. About three months ago I called to talk to a person about where was my edge protector strip. She reported they were sending out a crazy high number every day -- like a thousand or so -- and that my turn would come. She promised to ensure I got one after calling. Months later, nuthin'. A worthless safety program as far as I'm concerned.

Wish I'd bought a griplatch-style 72" bench from Menards instead. If anybody nearby STL wishes they'd bought one of these when they had the chance -- send me a pm. I'll make ya a good deal.

This is a 2011 thread. Tool boxes generally have a pretty short lifespan on Costco's shelves. I'd be surprised if you can find this anymore.

I brought it back to life just because I saw the safety notice on the recall notice board while doing a return

Wow. I haven't seen a long box like that in ages. One of the stores got a few Snap-On boxes but those were sold off within a week.
