i was at a flea market today and the guy had a smaller Columbian 400 vise for sale.

i tried looking it up on GJ but didnt find anything about it.

any wisdom on how old and how much it is worth in ok condition?

thank you

If it was a decent vice in size, weight and condition, and not an import, (usually gaudy chrome plate on the handle and such is a giveaway of it being an import), then I'd say it was likely worth it. Not having a photo of it makes it hard to say for definite, but $25 for a vice is hardly bad, if all points above are taken into consideration.

Btw, I'm not familiar with that model, so the above is just a general gauge. Was it an exposed leadscrew vice?

not exposed. and i think it was a 3 1/2" vise. i should have taken a picture but i didnt.

condition was ok to good. i didnt want to buy a smaller vise unless it was a killer deal and i couldnt find anything online about it.

i am sure the guy will be back next week and i will look again at it. i thought i might try my hand at doing a restoration for fun.

i am really looking for a 5" and that is why i poke around at the flea market that is only a couple of miles from where i live

There's no reason you can't "play around" on a Littletown vise. In fact it would be a good one to start on. But not at that price. If it was in decent shape I might go $15-20, but it would have to be near perfect sans paint.

jakemac, i agree. it is in good but not excellent. if i could get it for 10-15 bucks i might play with it. but i will wait and find a better one.

thanks again
