Couple air compressor questions

Hello everyone. I have an opportunity to get this compressor pictured in the manual for $500.
He said it's worth $1200 if it had a regular 220v motor.

The guy is an old tool dealer who's moving. I have dealt with him for many years and he's always been honest. He said the engine was redone about 8 years ago(I could be remembering the age incorrectly). He also said it works very well.
It's currently a 440v 3 phase, 1750RPM with a 2 stage pump I do not have that much juice going to the garage. Could this be converted to 220 single phase?
If so, is it worth the $500 + converting price?
I don't know much about compressors. I've had a 21 gallon HF for many years and wouldn't mind an upgrade. d301598f8928ac8a6b038b0ea20de558.jpg

Edit: compressor details and pictures

It all honestly depends on the capacity of the pump & horsepower of the motor... For both knowing the value and if it can be run on single phase...

Henke used Kellogg compressors, so that would be a keeper if it is small enough for a single phase motor. The picture on that manual is of a 462 (V-4 with 2 banks of compounded cylinders), which would be at least a 15 hp and not a good candidate for single phase.

What is the HP of the current motor??
If it were a 10 or 15 HP 3 phase,, you "Could" use a 5HP single phase, and Use a smaller pulley to slow it down to where you are not over taxing the 5HP motor. You would need to find someone familular with that pump to find out what RPM a 5HP motor would safely spin it. The motor and Mag would run you 400-500.

ALL that said,, you can find complete, good running 60-80 gallon 2 stage compressors used all day long for 400-600. Do you want a project that will cost you 500 more than a good running compressor, or do you just want a compressor.
The sum of the parts is typically twice what a good running compressor would cost you.

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head. I think I'll go with something like that. I don't often use much for grinders and whatnot. I think an 80 gallon upright would do exactly what I need to do during 99 percent of it's usage.

Thank you sir!

The tag says it's a 5HP 1750 RPM motor. Those are easy and relatively cheap to find in 240v single phase flavor.

However, $500 and needing a motor change is a bit steep IMO. I'd probably bite for $350-400.

Get something you can plug in and use.
You got to love it,,, it would be worth 1200 if it had a single phase "engine",,,,, but it doesn't have one,,, so it isnt.

I got a similar one for $100.

Lucky to find a NOS 5HP 1PH motor (Hard to find), new motor controller and other misc parts. Have about $500 in it without a rebuild.

I'd offer him $100. $200 max.

Bill

That is a Kellogg 335TV pump with the later head and valve design. It's about a 17 cfm compressor at 175 psi and 700 rpm if all up to spec. That's roughly the capacity equivalent of a Quincy QT5 and a very high quality compressor, but this one looks like it could use some love. It is not my experience that you can find anything near this in performance or quality for $400-600 unless they need a lot of work. Most quality 5hp 15-20 cfm compressors I have seen are $1,000 and up (sometimes way up) if ready to run. However, if you don't really need the capacity it may be more trouble than it's worth to you.

I would also want to know the condition of the tank. You might be buying a compressor that needs only a new motor or you might be buying a pump attached to a lot of scrap metal.

Forget $500 unless James Dean was using it the day he became famous for the last time.

$100 is still iffy. Lots of work to make like new. Parts are available. New Kellogg pumps of Chinese origin are sold out of Houston for $450 to $600.

There are so many candidates on the used market I would need to be certain this one needed minimal work or parts. Swapping in a Baldor, Leeson, or WEG is easy. The old 3 phase would make a bad *** belt sander. 2 X 132 or bigger.

I would rather have a champion, saylor-beall, or . . .
