Couple insulation questions

First, does anyone else have studs that are 19" on center? If so, how did you insulate? Most insulation widths are 15 or 23 inches.

Second, what R value should I use in the NY area? I have a two car attached garage that I wanted to finish off. I don't need it room temp but I want to be able to heat it up enough to go out there and tinker a little in the winter. I was told R11 would be fine but then some say to go higher. Any suggestions?

THANKS!

First off, welcome to the board. Are your walls 2x4? If so, I would use R-13, 24" unfaced and cut it at 19" long to (horizontally) fit the wall cavity. Then hang a vapor barrier before drywalling.

Brinks I agree at a minimum I would go R-13 if you have 2X4 walls however if you have 2X6 walls for your area I would go at least R-19 . I am in Louisville , Ky. and my area calls for R-19 walls and your further north than me .

The IRC defines the R requirements by the climate zone, but this is a requirement for any conditioned space. For all but NYC the requirement is R-19 or R-13 + 5, which is defined by R-13 of batt insulation and R-5 of insulated sheathing.

Ceiling Insulation is R-38 or R-49 depending where you are actually located.

Blowing insulation is a joy, handling fiberglass is a curse. I insulated an 1,880 sqft split level, walls and attic in two days. One day I drilled the 1" holes in the sheetrock, the next day I blew the insulation in with a helper dumping the bales into the hopper.
