I'm not even going to ask about the depth of a normal one sided work bench because I know it's been hammered to death on here. But I do have a question about work bench sizes. Picture this, a u shaped work bench with about6 feet in between the two benches. One side butts up to the wall and will be 28-32" deep (haven't decided yet) and the other side will be setup as an assembly/work bench that can be worked from both sides as it's open to the middle of the room. How deep do I need to make that work bench? I want it to be big enough for assembling cabinets and woodworking type things but not so deep that I can't reach across it. Any thoughts there?

I built a work table for the wood side of my garage and it's 4'x5' I believe. It works fine for me. I'd have no problem making that section of bench 4' wide, just make sure it's not too tall for you to be able to reach across a good portion of it.

Think of it this way, 4' would be a full sheet of plywood, if you use that for a top.

Four foot gives you 12" on each side if you're working on a 24" cabinet and 6" on a 36" unit.

I have two benches / tables that are 4x6 and on large locking 6 inch wheels. Most of the time they are used as out feed tables for the table saw, sometimes normal work benches, sometimes as assembly benches, the fact they are on wheels makes them much more useful in my opinion.

I agree with the wheel around work tables idea over a fixed bench.
I have 2.
Mine are 2'x4' and about 30 inchs high.
Perfect for small stuff and I often "C" clamp 2x4's to them for a larger table.
