Coupling nuts - lug

Looking to fab a light mount to attach to the top two lugs of a jeep spare tire. Anyone know where I can source long double ended lug nuts that I could screw on to the studs, then place mount and put another bolt into lug nut?

Like a coupling nut, but with the taper of a lug nut.

I would either weld a coupling nut to a lug nut, or just use the coupling nut with a washer...I suppose you could chuck a coupling nut in a lather and try and turn a taper if you really wanted...

Ive broken the cheap crome covers off of a few of them with too much haste. Inside the chrome cover is a smaller six sided nut. If you can carefully separate it at the folded joint down by the taper you could probably weld onto the back of it.

If studs were long enough, just shorter open lug nuts? If not, replace studs with longer ones. They do make really long blind lug nuts that might be cut threaded to make extension with female thread.
There are 'wheel stud extensions' available, lug nut that terminate with male stud...

Gorilla Lug makes 3" long in 9/16" and 2" in 1/2".

If its just on the spare you really wouldn't need a proper lug nut. I'd just use the coupling nuts and some bolts the same thread as the lug studs screwed into the end.

In the past I've used 4 open face lugs to accomplish this. I just put a couple of longer studs on the spare tire carrier. Bolt the tire on with two in the regular position. Put the plate holder on. Then, turn two lugs backwards and tighten them down. If you are going to have to carry it with you, why not have two extra lug nuts? If you get the right ones they are also the same size as your lugs so no other tools needed for a tire change.

Actually, not sure why this didn't occur to me, but if I get a normal open lug nut, it might leave plenty of thread to then attach a coupling nut. I didn't want to use just the coupling nut because of the potential to scratch the wheels with the square corners. I'll need to try this. Thanks guys.

Turn the coupling nut down at the same angle as the nut has. Just enough to do the job. Smooth it a bit and it won't hurt the wheel. It will have enough cone contact to retain the wheel and a light bracket just fine.

Make sure you have thread engagement equal or greater to thread diameter.

Lug nuts are just ordinary nuts they are available in all different styles
you can use a plane steel one and weld on it just don't use it on the
road wheels.
