Hello again,
My landlord ok'd me building a shop between my efficiency apartment and the main house and I'd like some advice from y'all on the best structural design.
The cove, as I call it, is 10x20 feet and has three walls with an approximately 1' overhang on each of those walls. The overhang is created by the houses' roof rafters. The front of the cove is open.
I want to enclose that space and use it as my shop. It needs a roof and a front wall with an access door. Both dwellings have access to the cove from our 2nd entrance/exit doors. My door is placed well back in the cove but the house's 2nd door is close to the front where the new wall is to be built so the slope of the roof cannot be but about a foot in the entire 20 foot length of the new roof that I want to build.
For that reason I think corregated metal roof panels is the way to go. Am I wrong in that assumption? But more importantly, what do you think is the best way to attach a roof to that three sided cove?
Here's what I thought: I would attach new 2x6 rafters to the house's existing 2x6 rafters and slope them the 20 feet and rest them on the new front wall. For side support I would attach extensions down from the side roof rafters making them a little longer as they go toward the front of the cove to account for the roof's slope, then secure the side rafters to the extensions. I would also support the roof fafters in the middle using cross member lumber somehow attached to the existing walls.
Any advise, pro and con, on this design would be much appreciated. This is in Northern Mississippi where snow and ice is usually not a problem.
