Garage progress is practically nill these days. We have so many house projects in flight that at the moment I don’t have much spare garage time.

I did discover something on the garage that i have never seen before. We are in the process of installing Hardie plank and this involves removing the vinyl and the original wood siding we discovered under the vinyl. The wood was in so-so condition, but I do not want the hassle of wood even though I do like the “look” of wood siding.

The garage is different. It is a cinder block garage with what appears to be concrete lap siding on the exterior under the vinyl. I don’t mean asbestos shingles either, I mean solid formed concrete that looks like lap siding.

I have never seen this. Have any of you? The house was built in the early 60s.

The new siding and garage door look good. Did you leave the windows in the garage when you installed the new siding all the way around?

How much quieter is the garage with the new door?

Is that a working cupola or just decorative on the garage?

I’ve never seen that old style of concrete lap siding. Maybe it the latest and greatest thing at that time. Or just rot resistant.

Yes, all the windows remain; I find I like the natural light despite them consuming valuable wall space.

The door is SO QUIET compared to the old wooden door with massive return springs on each side. For the past year I kept expecting it to fail every time it opened or closed. The new door seals better in all respects especially air leakage. There were 1" gaps all around the old wooden door and it never really sat level when closed. This new door is insulated too so I'm hopeful I can get away with only 1 kerosene heater this winter.

The cupula is functional and has a bell in it, along with a fair amount of mud daubers; lol.

I too have never seen concrete lap siding; I'm guessing rot resistant and durability since we are on the water. With the block walls and concrete lap siding this is like a bunker and likely hurricane resistant.

Looks like someone put those 2x's up to have shelves on that wall, can't tell if there is any holes to back that claim up. Just an observation.

That is an exterior wall; those are firring strips used to attach the siding. The interior walls are cinder block. This garage is built like a bomb shelter. lol!

Then maybe they had a trellis for plants to climb up at one time.

I'm sorry, I must not be explaining clearly....

The garage, and house, had vinyl siding installed. We removed that to install Hardie board. When the vinyl was pulled off the Garage, I found the concrete lap siding. The firring strips in the pictures were 'under' the vinyl serving as "nailers" to attached the vinyl since the lap siding is not smooth, nailers are needed to provide smooth nailing surface. We replaced the old ones with new firring strips to use as "nailers" for the Hardie board..

Did you ever get to the after cooler install! I bought one just like you did but haven't done a thing yet. I didn't see yours when I scanned through the posts?

No, I have not completed that project yet. The box taunts me every time I walk by the compressor. I was planning to do some over the Christmas holiday, but my wife wants an accent wall of reclaimed wood flooring in her office. So, I’ll be doing that instead.

A little “basement garage” work today… Hooked up leaf vacuum to pickup that last leaves from some very stubborn oak trees.

One more day to get the leaves up before the rain storms and weather hits us.

I still have some stragglers hanging in a tree.
I'm heading out over lunch to make the last pass, hopefully , for the year. It has been a nearly 2 month struggle/battle this fall with leaves!

Nice upgrade and great looking Jeep.
Thanks! They are serious ball joints, and I have over built my front axle for how I wheel, but I prefer this to how I operated my 1991 YJ, it was way underbuilt for how I used it and I broke more than one axle component on that Jeep back in the day. ah, the folly of youth, lol!

1995 YJ. A late model 95 too. It is in pretty good shape and the frame is terrific. Have to replace the passenger front fender only. The rest is mostly cleanup. Plan to make this mostly stock for Jeep show type events.

Progress is slow, but steady.

I have the Jeep panels off that I am replacing/repainting. I got the gas tank down and found a decent skid plate that I will clean and paint with chassis saver. I got the skid plate off, but broke/stripped 3 bolts in the process. The Jeep had a Ranch 2 1/2” lift on it and when I located the instructions, I found the Allen head bolts used for the drop kit were installed with loctite. I only have one left to extract, but I did get all the others out. The skid plate is trashed, but I’m lucky in that the frame is solid where it mounts and all the nuts are still secure in the frame. This frame continues to impress me.

I made some dollys for my axles and pulled them out. I’ve cleaned up the frame inside, and last night I coated it with Eastwood internal frame coating. Tonight I hope to start on the chassis saver for the frame, then the axles later in the week.

I have a pile of boxes with new parts that are just calling my name!

I have a bunch of YJ parts, message me if you are looking for anything, I can look and see if I have it.
Thanks. I’m looking for weird stuff like the spark plug wire organizer that the wires clip in to, and the heat hose clip. I’m also looking for the air box intake that fits between the grill and their air box.

I also need the brake line clips that run along the front of the frame on the driver side.

More progress…

Gas tank is back in with new sender/pump, lines and fuel filter. New exhaust is in from header back.

I also got out the broken skid plate bolt and installed the new transmission skid plate with the OME drop kit. I did not like the silver pucks so I have since painted them satin black to blend better. They are only there until winter when I plan to install an SYE and new CV rear driveshaft.

I also played with my polisher to see if i can remove some age from the paint. Looks like it will work to a degree. Only 10 minutes of effort gave me a noticeable improvement. I’ll come back to this when it is all back together.
IMG_0349.jpeg

I started on the suspension, but found I was shipped sway bar bushings instead of the shackle bushing sleeves I ordered. I only had enough to hang one spring. For the quality of the OME suspension, I don’t understand why they expect you to reuse your existing sleeves. Mine were toast after 28 years!

I also found my replacement fuel hoses from
the frame to the injection rail had an incorrect size on the supply. They are shipping me a correct one this week.

Monday I drop off my front fenders, hood and grill to be painted. I’m also going to visit an upholstery shop to see about getting my seats recovered. cheaper than buying quality new ones that always put you up too high.

This is not your typical rock crawler build to trash it on the trails. I already have a trail Jeep.

There is a lot to do and the missing sleeves have put me behind a fair amount.
