Hi all,

This is my first post, but have been lurking for a little while.

I need a rivet gun, mostly for upsetting 1/4 steel and occasional 5/16 steel frame rivets. Im a little torn between the Chicago Pneumatic 7x gooseneck, a brand until recently i was unfamiliar with, but as it turns out, I have a 734 impact in my drawer (I dont use power tools, especially air, that often lol), and the Ingersol Rand AVC 26B1 gooseneck, a brand I have some tools from, and respect. On paper they seem to be about the same gun, both able to drive a 5/16 steel cold. Is there anything I should know about either brand? Any recomndations? Ill probably end up getting a smaller 3x from doing body rivets.

I was originally looking at the 9x, but it appears the 7x is more powerful.

Thanks for any input

Bix

I know this is old, but in case this comes up in a search for someone else, I ended up getting the CP 7x gooseneck, and havnt looked back. It can handle much more than my air supply can, I did a number of flow upgrades to the compressor, which helped a lot, but I still need more air. But, I did set about 75 5/16 steel rivets with it, and it turned out wonderfully. The only drawback is that the custom rivet set isnt perfected (trying to match somewhat conical heads found on late 30s ford cars). If your air supply is not top notch, you will have a hard time setting the rivets, I think mine is a 60 gallon, 9cfm at 90psi, and its not really enough if you are going to do a lot of rivets. Hope this helps someone!

Why are the 7X guns more powerful than the 9X guns? I am researching this myself and finding the same issue.

I know this is an older post, but I happen to come across this when researching a new rivet gun, so wanted to chime in.

I BELIEVE the reason you see a lot of import 7x guns actually being more powerful than the same brand 9x guns, is because of some kind of translation/copy issue when they started cloning the CP/Desoutter guns in the Chinese/Asian markets (even though that's where they're all built now...:(

What is marketed as the 9x (import) guns fall in line with the OLD CP 9x guns - 3/4" bore / about 4" stroke / 1140 BPM. Under CP's current models, that would equate to the CP4287 (Desoutter 4447-RUTAB), which is NOW marketed as a 7x. Note - I have an actual old "CP 9x" gun - it actually says "9x" on the barrel rather than a model number.

In the current REAL CP/Desoutter line-up the gun designated as the "9x" gun is actually the CP4289 (Desoutter 4447-RUVAB) spec'd at 3/4" bore / 5+" stroke / 900 BPM. Looking at the imports, that lines up with most 7x guns.

From what I can gather, because the OLD CP guns had such a dominance (back when), when they started to copy/clone them, they kept the old designations.

I THINK as time went along, what was the OLD 9x got relegated to being classified as a 7x in favor of the much more powerful REAL 9x guns, and the cloners never adopted the change in designation. Rather, they started calling what is essentially the clones of the CURRENT REAL 9x (CP4289/RUVAB) 7x.
