CP711 Air Hammer Question

I bought a CP711 air hammer of ebay. I could use one for light DIY auto repair. I'm not very familiar with air tool manufacturers, their reputations, or their COO's. I based my purchase decision on CFM consumption and COO because I prefer to support US workers. I don't mind paying more to do so.

I chose this one because it is CLEARLY advertised as "Made in USA":

Well I received it, and it's not. It's CLEARLY marked "Made in China" both on the box and the hammer.

I'm upset that a seller would so boldly lie. I don't know if it's worth the hassle of a return. I'm sure this hammer would serve me well. I also bought and received a set of the appropriate .401 chisels made by Ajax from a different seller that I am satisfied with. So, if I return this hammer these chisels could potentially become useless to me based on what hammer I end up buying.

So should I just **** it up and keep it? I'm trying to balance the hassle of a return with my desire for a US made product.

Well, he wanted to buy american for as cheap as he could.

I don't think that's so bad. now BELIEVING he could pay $30 shipped for a new hammer...

just keep it. Just be more diligent on your next purchase. Pitch a fit with the seller. he may send a little $ back.

That's unfair, he was looking for an air hammer and saw one made in USA, and it was a good price. It could've been overstock or whatever. He didn't say his budget was $30. He saw a reputable name tool that said made in USA, not a stretch really.

I think it's F@$%ed up that he would do that. Putting it at the end of the description or something is one thing, maybe, MAYBE they didn't know. But BOLDLY putting it in the title of your item and trying to use that as a selling point, there's a special place in hell for those people. It's up to you though, if you like the tool, keep it, but definitely give him the most horrendous review possible. If not you are 100% justified to return it. That shank size is not uncommon, you wouldn't be wasting those bits at all, just get another air hammer and double check the shank size.

I never stated I expected to pay as little as as $30. I'm willing to pay more. I just thought I found a deal, but instead I found a fraudulent listing.

Your response is indicative of why I rarely post here anymore. I already regret wasting my time starting this thread.

Funny how the "MADE IN CHINA" is blurred out in the pictures of the tool handle. He is pushing the "MADE IN USA" in his ad. You can't tell me he didn't know they were made in China. Definitely mis-representation. I agree on the hassle of returning but not much else you can do if you want to hold him accountable. Maybe just a threat of a bad review and see what his response is. good luck.

If you make a thread about buying from an ebay seller who's selling 10+ new USA made air hammers for $30/pc shipped, don't expect everyone to be as shocked as you are that some details about the deal might be less than advertised.

Thank you to those of you who offered constructive advice.

I decided it is worth the hassle of a return in order to hold the seller accountable.

I'm just chalking this one up as a lesson. In the future I'll put more effort into research before I buy, rather than taking sellers at their word.

.401 shank diameter air hammer tools are a 'common' size.

So keep them and use them with pretty much whatever .401 shank air hammer you end up with.

Your call on whether you want to keep the CP711 hammer based on the seller's lie about the COO.

CP711 looks like it was the 'old' model standard-duty air hammer. It's no longer listed on the CP website.

The 'current' standard-duty closest replacement model looks like the CP7111. Red body and grip instead of bare aluminum is the first thing I noticed as different.

Moving up to the heavy-duty version is the CP7110. Same power as the CP7111 though (7.2 Joules listed power for both).

Strange difference (to me anyway) is that the heavy-duty CP7110 specs say 3200 bpm (that's not the 'strange' part) with an air consumption rate of 3.5 cfm avg and 14.6 cfm actual for that 7.2 Joule power rating. While the standard-duty CP7111 specs say 3000 bpm using air at 6.25 cfm avg and 25 cfm actual for that same 7.2 Joule power rating. Same listed bore and stroke for both models, 3/4" and 2.63" respectively.

CP has a more powerful air hammer in the CP7150, with a listed power of 9.5 Joules. Still uses .401 shank tools, and has the same bore as the other air hammers (3/4") but a longer stroke of 3.5". Listed as using air at 6.25 cfm avg and 25 cfm actual.

I have the CP7150 coming tomorrow which is supposed to be one of the most powerful .401 shank air hammers

Well, the return ended up not being a hassle at all.

I initiated the return, stating my concern and including pictures. Within an hour the seller responded that he had initiated a refund, and it would not be necessary for me to return the item. He also stated it was a mistake and that he would be correcting the listing, which he did. This is a more than satisfactory solution to me as I would have gladly sent it back to him as long as he offered to cover return shipping and agreed to correct the listing.
