Cp714 vs Snap-On ph3050

I've heard great things about each, but I haven't been able to find a comparison between the two directly. Does anyone have any experience with the two to help decide?

I get the impression that the snap on lacks control but has a good amount of power. I gather the CP714 is more controlable, but does it pack just as much punch?

I'm not interested in other units (superior pneumatic is too pricey right now and so is the larger shank CP717)

I don't know about the CP714, but the Snap On PH3050 has done everything I've ever asked it to, with ease. There are a couple of tools that everyone seems to say Snap On does better than anybody else, such as the PH3050, the BJP1 ball joint set, ... and then it gets to where people start debating. Nobody debates that the PH3050 is the best air hammer money can buy.

What? Plenty of people don't think much of the 3050. In fact i'd say its one of the most overrated air hammers ever manufactured considering most guys simply don't have experience with anything else. I dumped mine pretty quick and bought a Sioux. Hits harder and way better trigger control which was my primary issue.

Outside of garage journal most people don't know about using rivet guns or whatever they're called. Snapon is the best they know about

+1

I got an Atlas Copco 7x in like new condition for cheap money. Kicks so hard I really don't care to use it unless I have to. I have a CP RUSAB 3x which I paid 40 bucks for (Again, like new condition), which does 98% of the stuff I need it to do.
One good thing I like about the aircraft riveteters is 98% of the people don't know about them, so while people will bid 3050's and 717's sky high, I and the rest of us can buy some superior tools for less money :D

Don't rivet guns after a certain x (4x?) go to the larger shank chisels?

OP I bought a Mac AH412B in case with chisels for $53 shipped off eBay as well as a Mac AH750B for $35 shipped off eBay because it didn't have a retainer. They were both used, but in excellent condition. I then added a NOS quick release retainer for $13 shipped on eBay. So for $101 I have two awesome hammers, one short and one long, that do just as well as the two you mentioned. I buy a lot of stuff on eBay and when it comes to stuff like this, I make sure to ask a lot of questions and get the seller to say "item works like new with no problems" or something like that. Now if the tool doesn't function properly, I can use that against them and get my money back from eBay. I've never had a problem with air or power tools, but I also buy from reputable sellers with 99% and up feedback. Before I found these I was also looking into buying the rivet guns, but because the power level I wanted used the larger diameter bits, I opted to stay with the actual air hammers. I have tons and tons of chisels and other bits for air hammers. I don't need to spend more money on bigger ones.

Correct...1x thru 4x are .401, 5X+ are .498

I don't know an exact rating system for air hammers, but IMHO for the most part I would assume power levels on air hammers vs shank would be similar. Meaning...I cant see a 3050 (.401 shank) ever outpowering a .498 Shank hammer...

When I was looking everything I read here and elsewhere was that it was the bees-knees. Can you show me some of the comments that say its overrated so I can search better in the future?

For all intents & purposes...its an A-OK piece...The reviews & comments you've read were correct. And if you bought a 3050, you'd be happy I'm sure.

What Skin Said:

....if all you've used & experienced is the 3050, its a simply awesome piece. The CP 717 is also highly regarded...I don't think you'll find anybody say the 3050 is more hammer then the 717. But not many people have the bigger ones. I'm not joking when I say I hate using my 7X cause it kicks like a mule..

Serious question to the 3050 guys? does the 3050 have a progressive trigger like the riveters? or is it on/off? I wouldn't want to run one of any size without a progressive trigger.

The 3050 has adjustable power level but its really just on or off. My understanding is the difference between an air riveter and air hammer is the trigger. Riveters have a progressive trigger & air hammers do not. There are also bigger air hammers out there that run .498? shank bits versus the .401 shank bits of the 3050...

I have a Matco and a 3050 and the Matco is stronger I consider the 3050 my light duty hammer and I'm no Matco fan boy.

You are correct...on both of my riveters I can feather the "throttle"...makes it real easy to use & control.

There are "Hammers" out there larger the .498, but I don't think we could even remotely call them air hammers and include them in this discussion. Past a 10x air Riveter you get into what would be called air-chippers, rivet busters, jack hammers, etc..
