Crack in drill press chuck

I am cleaning up a Delta 17-900 Drill press prior to selling it. It has been in storage for about 15 years. When I cleaned the chuck I noticed this crack. I am assuming it is not supposed to be like this but wanted to verify. If it is defective, I will need to notify the buyer, or replace with a new one before I sell it. Any idea how this would have happened? Thanks!IMG_2865.jpg

That's an amazingly straight crack. I think I'd just remove the chuck and let the buyer replace it.

Hoop stress split the hood because it is a press fit on the cracked nut.

Take it apart, weld it up, press it back together.

You can pop the chuck off and replace it easy enough. Its a jacobs taper 3 fitting. If you are looking for top dollar then replace it. If you want to drop 50 to 100 off the price then leave it alone. A new chuck will cost you about 15 to 20 bucks for decent one.

I'd chuck in a couple different drills and see if it spreads badly when tightening. There are 3 places to put the key when tightening so you won't have to use that spot when really torquing on it if it spreads.

IMO, the sleeve will turn on the split nut during an attempt to tighten a bit in the chuck. Replace the chuck.

It could be welded but it is not a particularly expensive chuck. I'd just replace it.
That would be the best thing he could do, the chuck is kind of a POS anyway. A big 20N Jacobs might be worth farting around with, but this one no way.

IMO it can't be welded, well technically yes, but after welding the sleeve will very likely be deformed which is a press/friction fit on the split nut. Or in other words a precision fit.

As said, that chuck is nothing special, just replace it with another economy one or not. If I was selling it, I wouldn't even bother, especially if you don't have removal wedges or experience removing chucks from tapers. It might just leave you cussing & pissed off if you've never done it before.

Any idea how this [split] would have happened?
It's got a tapered fitting on the drill chuck (the "JT3" means Jacob's taper #3), and if it isn't cleaned with acetone prior to assembly, it can pop apart. Likely someone hammered it back into place without properly cushioning the chuck from the hammer blows. Why they hit it that far up, is anyone's guess.

A removal wedge might get it back off again; you can get these fairly cheaply, and likewise you can get a reasonably decent Taiwanese-made replacement chuck, both from Amazon.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I was able to get this off and have ordered a replacement from Amazon. I think it will sell better on Marketplace as a working unit and I will get the cost of the chuck back and then some. I did try the bad chuck on a bit and while it did eventually tighten up, it did not feel right. I really appreciate the prompt and helpful responses!

I’m a bit late, but if the chuck from Amazon is disappointing message me. I have a Jacob’s (USA) model 3A that will fit.
