I'm guessing you are considering it...

I had a (mechanical) digital readout Craftsman torque wrench. It looked really nice when I got it. A year or two after it broke, and was repaired. A year later it broke again, and I tossed it and got a new Proto with a calibration certificate that will never break.

There are two different versions of the Craftsman digital torgue wrenches. The one being asked about has much better reviews (and I personally own and recommend). The other version (bottom link) has horrible reviews. Also be aware that they take a very small specific battery, most of the 3-4 star reviews are complaining about the wrench not coming with those batteries and the customer not being able to find them "anywhere". Apparently, they don't shop for batteries anywhere other then the gas station down the street (they are super cheap on EBay). But it's a quality wrench.

Yeah, laughed at those bitching about the batteries like they are some hard to fine battery when they are supper common LR44 button cell batteries that can found at any Wal-Mart or Radio Shack.

FWIW, I have seen newer stock torque wrenches with a "Batteries Included" on the label and blister pack of 3 batteries inside the packaging.

I actually have both these torque wrenches and like them both with no issues. With the first one the OP is talking about, my only thing is that when replacing the batteries and backing out the cover screw, the screw is not captive and you have to be careful to not misplace or loose it.

It don't got no twist (that I can see ) so you gotta dial in the value on the doodad and it limits the value mechanically using black magic.:bounce:

Some people like these kind of setups because you don't got to twist to change the value. I can see a benefit. Probably the cdi ones are a better value than these at the msrp. But the technology has been used long enough that the chinese ones are probably pretty good at this point.

The Digiclick wrench you are talking about you have to twist the end of the handle to set the torque, the difference if that you have a digital display that is easier to read than the micrometer . It is still a click and mine is very accurate.

The one for $200 IS a strainguage type, The reviews are bad for this one though.

No... Most digital torque wrenches simply beep and have an LED indicator to tell you when you've reached your desired torque, they don't mechanically limit you from continuing to torque the fastener further.

So, its a line of BS? Because we all know that it won't keep you from going past value if someone really wanted to?

I would not take one of these it it were free.

It has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I would have a hard time considering the one in the is thread since I severely mistrust Craftsman now re their Electronic torque wrenches.

The one pictured here just quits working while laying around in your toolbox.

I used it twice. Tried to use it a few years later, no way to fix it. There are a few websites devoted to trying to fix them, didn't work for mine though.

Their boards and displays just seem to self destruct.

Same exact thing has happened to me. I paid somewhere north of $200 when they first came out. it won't work now.

Luckily I bought a CDI torque wrench when I rebuilt my diesel (heads had to be torqued to 216 ft-lbs)

Who has the digital click type and could get me the instructions. I picked one up used and need to know what the functions are after I get new batteries. It currently says STOP when I power it on?

"STOP" means you are out of limits of either the lower or the higher end of the adjust range. Hopefully it was not stored with it adjust max scale out of limits as it will skew the calibration if stored for any significant length of time.

Pull the end adjust handle and adjust either way to see if it comes into scale and starts showing a adjustment reading. If it does not, you bought a brick.
