So I’m rebuilding a Craftsman 1/2hp motor and currently trying to get the cover band on and around the end bell. It’s super tight and won’t go on any further. When reinstalling am I supposed to slightly uncrimp the folded metal where the ends meet?

If so, how will I get them tight again? Light hammer taps? Other?

I've done about a dozen of these motors and that stator band can be a real PIA. I wouldn't suggest loosening the crimp, I had one break off on me. Make sure you're not getting any wires caught up in where the band rests. It's easy to do. Other than that, it's a matter of holding your tongue right and working it on. I sometimes have to use light taps of a rubber mallet. Other times I enlist my wife to get another set of hands involved. Best of luck!

Thanks and sorry for late reply. I finally got it all closed up. There’s only one last item I need to redo when I have a chance, but otherwise she runs like a champ.
