Craftsman 101.03580 Drill Press Rebuild

I am in the process of getting ready to do a rebuild on what I believe to be a Craftsman 101.03580 bench top drill press.

Currently the drill press is a little slow to start and has a lot of runout on both the motor spindle and the drill spindle, so I am going to replace bearings on both the motor and the spindle / quill and inspect / repair any damage to the spindle.

I do know that the motor pulley has a bit of wobble in it as well so I will be looking that over to see how to get a tighter fit.

I have yet to find a parts diagram or exploded view of the the drill press, so I'm not completely sure what I need for bearings as of yet, as I haven't had time just yet to break it down.

I figured I would reach out to all of you and see if you might have suggestions on what bearings I need and where I can go about sourcing a parts diagram of the drill press.

Also, if you are very familiar with the particular drill press, is there any particular means of dating it? I that they were produced from the late 30's ~ early 40's to the late 60's, but was wondering if there was a more specific means of dating them?

Those old manuals won't tell you much, but the manual for your model can be found here

I was able to find that manual, was just wondering if there was an exploded view of the press anywhere, but so far am striking out. Looks like I will just have to rip it down and start sourcing bearings.

The paint is in pretty good condition, so aside from getting cleaned up, greasy parts thrown in the parts washer and doing a mechanical rebuild, I think I am going to forego a complete restoration, especially considering its in a trade school where it probably won't be kept super clean after anyhow.

I am more concerned with reducing its excess vibration and removing as much runout as possible.

Did you remove the chuck and check the spindle runout? How much runout is there?

How much slop when you push on the spindle?

I was able to find a parts diagram for an Atlas 1010 drill press, which the Craftsman is, as I understand it, more or less a rebadged version of.

The parts manual can be found here

It's not a lot of good for parts numbers, but will be very helpful for general disassembly / assembly.

Did you remove the chuck and check the spindle runout? How much runout is there?

How much slop when you push on the spindle?

The drill press literally got set on my bench this evening about 15 minutes before I left, so I just snapped a couple of quick pictures and decided to do a bit of research this evening before ripping into it in the morning.

My hope is to have it apart by mid morning and get bearings ordered tomorrow so I can start working on it when I get back on Monday. YAY for 4 day weekends :rocker:!

As for runout, there doesn't appear to be a lot of slop on the drill spindle, barely enough to notice when pushing on it by hand, however, there is a LOT of slop (1/16~1/8") on the motor spindle.

I haven't had a chance to look it over with a dial indicator yet, so I can't really tell you exact numbers, but will be looking into it in the morning.

From what I can tell so far, it appears the chuck is just on a taper, so it should just pop off with a wedge, but I will investigate further in the morning.

I would check runout first before going through the job of doing bearings. Sometimes it';s just the chuck that is running out.

Just looked at the manual and there are no bearings that actually matter for runout on that press, it looks like it has only bronze bushings like my Atlas drill press.

Sure pull it apart and clean it all, but I would check runout first and if there is any then replace the bushings.

After disassembling the press, I think I found the primary source of vibration on the press. The spindle shaft either cracked or was significantly worn at the lower bearing of the quill and was brazed and looks to have been returned on a lathe.

The taper for the chuck appears to be slightly out of center and the shaft appears to have slightly warped from being brazed, so I am sending it over to the machine shop to have a new shaft made, so its at a stand still until that is finished.

Chucked up the spindle in a lathe and found that the taper was WAY out, so I did a very light turn on it and reshaped it, reassembled and it seems to work great! It still has about 0.004" of runout, but it was coming from almost 0.010 ~ 0.089" of runout before the repair with heavy vibration throughout the press.
