Good afternoon all,

After a long time scouring Craigslist I finally found a great vintage Craftsman drill press. It is in great running condition and is so quiet and just what I had hoped it would be.

Now, it's not perfect! It has some missing pieces I would like to find. It's missing the table, a proper handle and the depth stop. Also the height adjustment along the main column and being able to turn it is stuck pretty good.

All in all the previous two owners took good care of it and it works exactly as I would have hoped. But that being said I would like to tear it down a bit and restore it so that it still work as good for my son, grandson and beyond, as it does today.

Not sure why there is another shaft on the bottom.....?

Any feedback or references would be appreciated. I searched around quite a bit and I know there are a couple really long threads but I have two small kids! Haha!

First comment on the motor. Back in the day the dp would be sold without the motor and that would be sold separately. That is a universal motor that could be used for other purposes hence the type of shaft. The table is going to be tough, but fortunately the base will work for the time being.
You should be able to find more information, probably including a manual check out vintage machinery.org
I think it was made by Atlas.

Made by Atlas for Craftsman circa. 1935-1938 (????).
The Companion motor would be period correct. The date code is difficult to read, but it looks like it may be 1938. (I can see a 4 and an 8, but the Companion label was replaced by Dunlap around 1940)

Keep an eye on eBay for parts. Every now and then one gets parted out.
Parts can get expensive. I paid $50 just for the spindle cover and had to wait 3yrs to find one.

To determine the size of the DP, measure from the center of the of the chuck to the post. Double the number and you'll know if it's a 11", 12", 14", or 15" DP. I'm guessing it's a 14" or 15".

EDIT :
Here's a link to the manual.
