Hi, I am wondering if anybody has modified this drill press to slow the speed down. At the lowest 500 RPM I am really not able to use larger drill bits as they dull quite fast. Also the chuck RJ 33 13L slips and the replacement key fits way too loose in the pilot hole. Would like to keep the press but not wanting to invest more in it than what it is worth. Took belt guard off and cannot use traditional speed reducing adapter in it as the stand pipe is in the way of the adjusting assembly. Outside of just fabricating a piece between the casting to hold a reducer post I have seen outside pulleys where you cut the belt guard and install a large intermediate pulley from the motor to the pulley then a belt from it to the spindle. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

hi, That is what I am trying. I built a offset crank arm today and installed a 5 step pulley on it. Tomorrow I will try and fabricate a post from wood down inside the drill press head to see how it works. The drill press has a tapered cast iron head from front to back and everything has to be installed from above as the bottom is closed up! And of course there is a lip which prevents you from just sliding a post down in there. Even has the adjustable belt assembly right in the way. So using a wood post will be a first attempt.

Hi, well I abandoned the thought of trying to install a post inside the drill press and made an outside post to hold an intermediate pulley centered between motor pulley and spindle pulley. Will work great using link belt style v belt. Going to have to cut the guard a bit! My problem is now locating a 5 step pulley that accepts the 3L belt (3/8 inch width) that came with the drill press. Will use this for the intermediate pulley. Factory craftsman part number 817505 comes up empty! Cannot locate a replacement. Everything out there is for 4L belt and above. Any sources or places to find one? Thanks.

Hi, I was able to reduce the speed of the Craftsman drill press from 500 to about 200. I took the 5 step pulley from the drill press and made a swing arm assembly mid point from the motor shaft and quill shaft. I ended up mounting it on the outside left of the drill press head. It swing in an arc thru the center point of both shafts. I inverted the pulley also. I purchased two new shorter belts and cut out the belt guard for the new assembly to rotate as needed. At this time I have a single groove 3L pulley on the motor but am looking for another 5 step pulley to give me more speed choices. Guess they are not easy to find. Thanks to all for your help.

Do you have photos of your setup? I'm considering this mod. Thanks

This an old post but thought I would offer my recent experience. I recently replaced the AC motor on my craftsman 13” with a treadmill dc motor. Had to add a box on the side for new electronics but now is variable speed with great torque even at low speed….lowest is 150 rpm
