Just picked up a 12 Drawer Craftsman Chest for $20 at a garage sale. Scratches and rust spots but worthy of fix up and use. This is what it looks like new:

Michiganders moving to Cali!

Grandpa's old tools. I'll post the rest of them later. You can see one in the van. It's a Craftsman vise painted red. In fact, he painted ALL his tools red. Got them all for an additional $17. Here's some photos.

Nice box if your curious there should be a date code on the box. In the top portion lower left corner. Will be stamped something like 3-65 for march of 1965.

Are you talking the grey cabinet with the red drawer fronts? I actually like the red cabinet with black drawer fronts better.

And where can I get a paint to match the grey?
What's the best way to go about redoing the box?

I don't know about paint or redoing the box but yes I was meaning the grey with red.

That was a steal. I bought a box with that exact same configuration back in 1996 for $150 new. I wouldn't paint it, it looks like the original finish is still in good shape. Just clean it up nice and it will be ready to go.

I would love to be able to do minimal work to restore the box without repainting. It has lots of little places where it was scratched or worn and the bare metal has rusted. What method has anyone used to remove the rust and protect the bare metal? Rubbing compound and wax? Light steel wool and clear coat?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Surface rust on metal always has to be "killed" prior to coating it with anything. I've used Ospho for decades for that purpose. Any Auto Paint Supply store will have it - and I believe that Home Depot now carries it.

Rust - aka iron oxide - contains it's own oxygen. So even if you cover it up with anything, it still contains enough of its own oxygen to continue the oxidation process for a time. That continued growth is usually enough to break though the top coat you have covered it with. So rust must be killed before it's top coated with primers, paints, waxes etc.

Oshpo is a mild solution of phosphoric acid {about 12% as I recall}. Phosphoric Acid applied to Iron Oxide {rust}, will chemically convert the rust to iron phosphate. This eliminates the oxygen contained in the iron oxide and stops rust from growing.

Just wipe some Ospho on any scratches - let it do its chemical work - then cover it in any manor you desire.

I bought almost that same Craftsman box around 1974 - only with one deep center drawer, rather than the three smaller drawers shown in your box. The one deep center drawer held my soldering gun nicely.

I'm not positive - but the Gray boxes with red drawers at the time - were the top of the line. The red boxes with the black drawers were smaller cheaper boxes.

FWIW,
Carl B.

You **** man! I wish I could find a box like that around here for even close to that price. Let me give an example:

LOL

Dave

sounds like CL prices around here too.
ive had better luck at garage sales and flea mkt

bought my kennedy cantilever for $9 and '70 cm top for $20. both at flea mkts.
i see cl/ebay prices at the fleas too, and can tell who is trying to pay the mortgage vs. someone who just want all their "stuff" gone at a garage sale.

usually some flea mkt seller complaining (at the top of his lungs) about how nobody is buying, i got good stuff, and those are going for $***.** on ebay.

I have that chest in red/black. I've had it for almost 30 years and it's still a great tool box! I will never sell mine, when I die I want to be buried with it! (Just joking, but it is a good box and $20 is a great price!)

I have that chest in red/black.

Same here. 12 dwr. Craftsman. Non-bearing slides.
I picked mine up used from my Snap-On dealer about 4 years ago as he got it as a trade-in and wanted to unload it quickly due to truck space.

I paid $75 for it and thought I got a pretty good deal for something that is now used as a home workbench box. Was clean and came with working lock and keys.

$20 to me was a killer deal for the same box!

Just a note........always ask the woman for a price on tools at garage sales. Here she said $20. As I was paying the man said he was going to ask for $30.
At another sale the guy said $10 for a pair of jack stands. The woman overheard and said, give me $5. Either women are more generous, I'm more handsome than I thought, or they aren't as attached to tools as guys.........it must be the handsome thing!
