Craftsman 142pc Socket Set?

Pardon my ignorance, but does anyone have any insight into this particular socket set?

It seems like a good deal and it works out to just over $1.90 a socket for 142 pieces. I would like to know if this would be a good buy or if my money is best spent elsewhere. SK, Williams, Proto, etc...

I wanted the 299 piece socket set, but I'm going with Gearwrench sockets...all 6 point, so far....the price is reasonable, if you shop around, and the quality can't be beaten for the price...

Just a thought...

I'll tell ya this. The chrome on the USA laser etched sockets socket! Looks great at first. And after no use in 6 months or longer, the dined thing looks like it has shingle disease. That's how bad the rust is. Granted I live in a PMS weather environment where it can be 60 one day and 20 and snowing the next. But my duralast sockets don't look like this. Neither does my Stanley, kobalt, Carlyle, gearwrench, or whatever else I have in my box. Yes they are USA made. And they only reason I bought these few select sockets was to complete some trays. The worse one I noticed yesterday was a 3/8 drive 1" deep socket. So that should tell you there's no real reason to use it! Lol. Plus the inside of the socket is rough feeling like sand paper. There's no chrome on the in side. I'll take pics tomorrow if anyone wants.

I think will end up with the 142pc set I originally posted. It just seems like the best deal for me right now

There are no 1/4" drive metric sockets in that 142 piece set -- the 300 piece set is a more complete set.

Wait until I show you the rust on my sockets tomorrow. Remember the picture tomorrow are still practically brand new. And even if they was used, my 3 year old duralast sockets don't look anything like that. IMO your money is best spent elsewhere for cheap. Id even venture to say to to hf and get the pro sockets. Can't be any worse.

By you stating this about no use for both 6 and 12 point I can see you have not worked on much. There are 6point bolts then there is 12point bolts. 6point for rusted stuff/impacts 12point is better in tight clearances. the china **** is no where near the quality of older usa made that you can pick up dirt cheap at yardsales swapmeets Ebay and this forum.

As of January, the 299 pc socket set was still USA...or at least mine was.

I agree Sears has better deals in some of the other sets. But,,, big difference in 2 dollars a piece or 10 or even 30. Sears stuff is a bargain. If I had to start over tomorrow it would be on my short list. I can tolerate a little blem for under 1$ a socket in some cases. Disposable prices in todays world.

Now as.you can see these are the last(latest) USA craftsman sockets. 15/16 and 1" deep 3/8 drive. Never used. Just exist in.my box to fill pegs. IMO, that's inexcusable for a socket. These are the sockets you'll get in the big kits if they're USA made.

The red band socket is a duralast. Bought within a month of me buying the craftsman. Chrome is perfect on it. The second socket after the red band duralast is also a duralast bought 3-4 years ago in a metric deep and shallow set. It has very light pitting on it. To that is acceptable due to the faft they've been used ALOT over the years, and were only like $25 back then.

Well, that's my .02 cents. Do with it as you will. Jmo, the last generation of USA sockets from craftsman are junk. Old crftasman with stamped sizes without the laser etching, they're good and don't rust like these one did.

I bought the 299-pc. set earlier this month, and it was all still made in the USA.

That could probably help. But my thoughts are I have older "cheaper" sockets that have actually been used that don't look like that.

That would only work if the drawer was completely sealed and air tight
to the outside world. Otherwise the constant presence of the atmosphere
inside the drawer will very quickly saturate a silica gel pack and make it useless...

nice shiny new tool could be occupying....

Google is your friend, just google the model numbers of sets. Harry Epstein is a good source.

As an update to everyone, I ended up going with the 299pc set. I got a smoking deal and only paid $311 shipped to my door. And it was still made on the USA.
