Post up the other pics, particularly the last one. That almost looks like it has parts for the very expensive speed reducer on it.

The folks at Electric Motor Warehouse (via Amazon) got me a new one for a Duro Metal Products benchtop drill press I'm restoring. They're very well made and include a 5/8" to1/2" split bushing to accomodate most motors of the type you might have. Mine went on a Craftsman/Packard Electric 1750 RPM 1/2 HP motor. The pulley carries part number 4X560, $22.00, $13.00 shipping. Manufacturer is Congress Drives, Detroit, USA.
One thing to look for if you get one. I had to clean the set screw threads (9/16ths) up on the pulley a little. Also, the split in the bushing on mine was a little too narrow for the set screw to fit through to the motor shaft. I opened it up about an 1/8th with a hack saw/file and it fit like a glove. 5-10 minute job.
McMaster-Carr also has them and is great company to deal with. Hope that helps out.

I can only post 1 pic at a time so I'll have to post a few times. I'll give him a call tomorrow - anything specific I should ask/look for? I can see if the motor runs but without a pulley won't be able to see the other parts spin. I will check to make sure it has smooth operation moving it up and down, look for any slop, and...? He's had it in there for a week or more, may be able to negotiate a lower price since it's missing the pulley.

Seriously - you're asking this group if you should buy a tool? 
A third one followed me home recently. I needed it like a hole in the head, but at $30 wasn't going to say no. The tilt table is worth that. Which brings me to the point that at the right price you can always part it out, and this is a machine that people look for parts.

It looks like it has the arms for the Vari-Slo but not the handle or pulleys. I would pick it up. You could probably easily convert it to a regular drive and sell the Vari-Slo parts on ebay for what you have into the press. Check for spindle runout and that the motor works.
