I am starting to rebuild a Craftsman 150 drill press that I inherited from my dad last year. There are a couple of threads with very details photos showing how the unit comes apart. It was really very easy to get it completely disassembled in about 25 minutes.

I have the unit completely taken apart and I removed the headband, degreased it and will sandblast it this weekend. I took the bearings to a bearing house and bought the two quill bearings as well as two pulley bearings. My first question is do you guys lube or grease the bearing races at all before you press them into the quill or head cast for the pulley?

I will post some pics this weekend.

Thanks,
Troy

When installing bearings with dust protectors, I soak them in oil before installing.

In for pics!!

I did get sealed bearings. I picked up:
2 6205zz 2rs (pulley bearings)
2 6202 2rs (quill bearings)

I am actually asking about whether the races that these bearings fit into should be greased. Not the bearings themselves since they are already sealed.

Thanks,
Troy

I wouldn't lube those races. However, I would enure that those races are clear of any debris prior to re-seating them. Sounds like you're on the right track. Pics?

I hope you bought the 6202 bearings with the special 5/8" bore. If not they will not fit over the splined 5/8" spindle shaft.

I would not try to grease a sealed bearing but would put a thin coat of oil on the shaft and bore that they go in. I worked in a bearing factory for over 12 years. I went to Japan for training on rebuilding spindles and was taught to lightly oil the shaft and bore of the spindle before installing the bearings. We used DTE lite or R&O 32 for the spindles. Any light weight oil should do.

I did in fact buy the 6202 x 5/8" bore. Thanks for the correction and the tip about a thin coat of oil on the shaft and the bore.

Looking forward to getting this thing put back together. I am beginning to wonder if some of the play I was feeling in the chuck was due to the fit between the quill and the machined surfaces in the head casting. With everything apart, I put the quill back in the casting and still felt a small amount of play. I will measure the runout when I get it back together.

Thanks,
Troy

Made some good progress today. Sandblasted the base and discovered that my 1950's Craftsman compressor most likely needs some attention since it had a really hard time recovering. Luckily I had bought a top end valve rebuild kit for it last year when I inherited it from my dad along with this drill press. I also followed the lead of others here and build a homemade lathe to sand down the column. Worked like a champ. I started with and 80 grit sanding block and worked up to 180 grit. I only spent about 5 minutes at each grit. I was torn as to how polished I wanted it to look. I knew that the more polished it looked, the more peeved I would be the first time I scratched it moving the table up or down so I settled with it looking pretty good but not perfect. Here are some pics:

I just bought a Craftsman 150 floor press. Has some play in the head pulley assembly. Where can I find the pulley and quill bearings?
Thanks
