craftsman 150 drill press, wrong pulley?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking for a little help on my drill press, I think someone changed the pulley on the motor ? as I change speeds the tension on the belt changes. If someone has this drill press could you please measure the pulley and see if it is the same as mine?

You have to re-tension the belt when you change speeds. It doesn't look like the stock pulley, as the one I have doesn't have a key, but rather just a set screw, but it shouldn't matter as long as it works with the press.

I have the 150 identical to yours.
I measured my rear pulley, It's 5 inches. I have never had to re-tension mine. I have the same 5" pulley on the front (inverted). As long as when i change belt locations, i do it on both pulleys-no adjustments are needed.

If yours is a floor model, you might wanna take a look at an improvement i made to mine. Very Simple, very useful.http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=97153&highlight=craftsman+drill

I have a 150 as well and my rear pulley is also 5" . The only speed I have to retension for is the bottom one and with it I also have to raise the rear pulley to keep the belt from hitting the top of the drill press.

Thanx so much for the replys, it confirms what I was thinking, the pully on the motor is too small which is why the belt gets way too loose when I try to go to a higher speed.
Thanx for taking the time to do the measuring !!!!!!!!

Any ideas where I could get the right pully?

looks like the part number is 38390 (according to this link).

But finding one may not be as easy. I'd say keep an eye out on ebay-even put in a notify search in case that part number shows up. Ya might check with Grainger. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/CONGRESS-VBelt-Pulley-1L843
You might even luck up on a craigslist sale for an old drill press being parted out. Or post on the vintage machinery forum want list. You might get lucky.
Good luck!

One other little trick you might try is good old sears although the part wont be cheap . I know sears still stocks some parts for my old lathe although so does Clausing and they are slightly cheaper through clausing.
