Sears is toast , they losing money faster the the post office

People have been saying that for decades, but Sears is alive and surviving.

My suspicion is that Sears will be around longer than any of us here.

You may not be shopping efficiently, many of us bought when the C3 was under $50 for the kit, and I'm probably not the only one who got it free with points earned from sweepstakes.

Please show us how to get the Ryobi for free or money back, that would be a great deal if free is "overpriced".
It's a dead platform. Sold in a zombie company. Sears can't even afford to ship at this point. I'd rather spend money on tools that I'll be able to warranty and has a good lineup

Not sure where you are getting that information but it's not accurate. Sears is alive and is shipping C3 products, even recently added at least one new tool. Definitely can warranty and has a good line up.

Why do people on this forum love to post in threads only to bash a product or company??

Does the Sears Craftsman impact wrench page say in flashing neon:

Use this day in and day out to strip down buses, bridges and bulldozers!

No. If you are going to use it every once in a while, this one would be great. If someone needs one to use to make a living, go get an expensive one that will do the job.

I ordered a C3 reciprocating saw last night. I am going to prune some trees and cut down a few small trees from time to time. I am not looking to start an arborist service company.

What is the point in coming into threads bashing people that don't buy a certain brand??

Adapter for 19.2v to Milwaukee m18 or dewalt 20v arrived. Battery is a little loose but it works good. 74f58583e6f233f530d5c849a0dda7c5.jpg

I assume you are loosing a bit of power using the 18 volt battery. How is the life and power as it wears down?

I am not here to bash but to learn and to share what I have learned.

I’m not really sure, to make themselves feel better? The C3 1/2 inch impact I bought is fine for my needs, if it’s not enough I’ll use an air impact.

Even if you make a living doing it an expensive one is not necessarily better. Plenty of youtube videos prove that.

Haven't used a full battery on the yet. Torqued a nut to 200ft lbs and my old craftsman impact took it off so still has enough power.

Though it's all been sold and gone for a while now, I have to say all of my C3 tools served me well. The impact wrench had no trouble rotating the tires on my dually that were torqued to 155 ft/lbs, on one battery.

Really my only gripe with C3 was not being able to drive to the store and get a new tool or another battery, which was why I sold it all.

I'm not really "up" on electronics, but it's been explained on here that the 19.2v isn't really all that accurate and the tool motors are designed to run 18v anyway (Ryobi is only advertised as 18v on the same tools).

Hey TTMotorsports, do you have a link for that adapter? My FIL can get free M18 batteries from work (they buy tool kits for the tools and throw out the batteries and chargers :shocking: ) and has some C3 tools himself, so I think he'd like one of those! Edit - nevermind, I ended up finding some listings.

The batteries are made up of (5) 3.6v nominal cells, so the actual nominal voltage is 18v. The 19.2v is (5) cells at a fully charged 3.85v.

Thanks for that explanation. I will have to put my DVM on one of my C3 batteries and see what voltage it reads.

Since I have upgraded to LI-ION i am very happy with my impact wrenches and drill. I don't use them every week but only once did it not remove an over tightened lug. The car was serviced at NTB and the threads all lugs nuts on all wheels were damaged. I actually had to go to a SO air impact and broke the impact socket in the process of removing it. I was asking it to do something it was not designed for. So no complain from me.

Generally, Li-ion go from 3.6v nominal to 4.2v fully charged. That "fully charged" voltage rapidly drops to the nominal voltage when you start draining the battery.

Some more info is available at https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/confusion_with_voltages

Yeah, you're right. The full fresh-off-the-charger voltage will be 4.2v-4.3v. The 3.85v is also nominal but of a different chemistry than the 3.6v. Or, they are basing the nominal voltage off a higher max charge voltage? I really don't know, but always believed the 19.2v to be marketing ****, with the batteries really being 18v. Even DeWALT's 20v MAX batteries are really 18v nominal.

Yep, it's marketing ****. The 18–20V batteries are all 5 cell jobs. 18÷5=3.6, 20÷5=4.

Sears Craftsman 19.2 volt tools came with NiCd batteries originally. The 16 individual cells were 1.2 volts each. 16 x 1.2 = 19.2. Other NiCd battery powered tools of the time were usually powered by some quantity of 1.2 volt cells:

24 volt (20 cells)
19.2 volt (16 cells)
18 volt (15 cells)
16.8 volt (14 cells)
14.4 volt (12 cells)
12 volt (10 cells)
and so on down the line

To call the later arriving Li-Ion batteries anything other than 19.2 would have been a disaster!

Hey guys I need some help. I just got this aftermarket battery https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G7TWG11/?tag=atomicindus08-20 last night I put it on my Craftsman LiOn charger, this morning at full charge I tested it out with my impact wrench model 315.116020. This 1/2" impact wrench (which I got 5yrs ago and has a 200 ft-lbs rating) is the reason I bought the 5Ah battery because it struggles to loosen lug nuts that are torqued to even 100 ft-lbs when I use it with the 1.2Ah LiOn or the 3Ah NIcad it came with. However, the 5Ah battery cuts the power after a few seconds when under load. I have to press the charge indicator button on this battery to reset it. Not sure if I received a defective battery or if this is how these big batteries are designed but it's unusable in my case. I did notice that lately the NiCad battery also stops (not abruptly but gradually) supplying power to the wrench after a few seconds under heavy load but when I check the voltage on the NiCad it still shows full charge (20v+) so I figured the NiCad is tired and why I bought this 5Ah one. The impact wrench works fine (without the power cutting out) with the LiOn 1.2Ah batteries but just doesn't have the torque I need. Any ideas, recommendations aside from continue to move away from the C3 line (I have been with any new tools I need I buy Ryobi).

EDIT: Doing a little more research into these knock off batteries I've discovered that they have 'over discharge protection' which I'm pretty sure is the issue here. I've reached out to the seller to see if they have a solution, otherwise I'll rebuild my existing NiCad battery with fresh cells and call it good.

You'd be better served buying an XCP pack. Yes, the 4.0ah will cost around $60, but it's worth it. Aftermarkets just aren't worth messing with. And they're usually toast in a couple years anyways. Ni-Cads are pure garbage not worth sinking a single dime into. The XCP packs are noticeably more powerful than even the regular lithium C3 packs. If you never want to have trouble removing lugnuts again, buy the XCP.

That doesn't sound too bad if it works well for the impact wrench. Got a link for the $60 XCP battery you're referring to?
Also since I'm not familiar with the XCP battery line. Does it use the same charger as the regular C3 LiOn? I have a dual chemistry C3 charger.

Here's a new one for $54.50:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Crafts...699123?hash=item287a3fe333:g:mR4AAOSwKAJbP7zq

You can also find the slim packs in XCP as well.

XCP is just a much better C3 battery pack. Better cells, better case, better electronics, battery gauge, etc. I don't even bother with the regular C3 lithium packs. And Ni-Cads are just junk. XCP packs will work fine in your dual chemistry charger. They'll take longer to charge since they have a lot more capacity.

Awesome, thanks! I bought it.

Me too!

I just now purchased two of em. Great price for brand new, and I got an aditional $3 off with code PERFECT3. I already own 4 of the XCP batteries and have been extremely happy with them!

Thanks Jalopy J

Dudes ...I have a 19.2 C3 stapler that I would like to sell here before going on Ebay. I purchased this on Ebay and then a month later found a smoking deal on another one through OfferUp. I would like to get $60+$15 estimated on shipping. I tested it and it works just fine. The box included may not match the stapler exactly as I swapped into the box with the one I got on OfferUp.

Email me directly..bpj71 at yahoo.com4d30f3d5f09499119ec312e6f0ad8b4c.jpg338e7fd97a74251b4b0bf9d157b58c29.jpgb09795e6ad02e5311d91988515a1bc62.jpg2acaa4d5ac81b48b3a7e68221d9d8b60.jpg

Thanks for the link to the XCP batteries from eBay. I bought one and got it yesterday. Its a genuine C3 battery and was recognized just fine by my charger. Too bad the seller is sold out now, or I might have bought another.

Keep watching this seller. It appears by his feedback and completed auctions, that he’s been re-listing and selling them for some time now. I purchased two batteries and received them yesterday. After seeing how legit these batteries are, I want to buy more also. I’ll just keep a watch on his auctions.

I too got my battery yesterday, put it on the charger and it works well. However, looks like there are some smart circuitry built into these batteries? After it sat idle for a while I tested it with the voltmeter and the voltage showed 8.4v or so for a fully charged battery. However, if you use it on a tool, then take the voltage measurement it shows 20v. I tested it multiple times. It works fine though and the regular C3 dual-chem charger recognized and charged it just fine.

All of the lithium batteries have some pretty complex circuitry inside of them. However, the condition you are noticing does not appear on all C3 lithium packs. The base packs made by Ryobi (PP2010 and PP2025) do not do this. However, the XCP packs (PP2020, PP2030, and 5166.2), and the Chervon made base packs (5166 and 5166.1) all go to sleep after 15 seconds or so like you described. I can't remember if the old first generation lithium packs do this or not. Long story short, it's normal operation. They wake up the instant a load hits them. There is no noticeable delay in power even if you were looking for it.

Be careful with that website. Mostly correct info, but it is waaaaay out of date. That very battery comparison you just mentioned is missing the 3 Chervon batteries and at least 3 chargers. They've been out for several years now.

This seller re-listed the batteries again today. Coupon code “MYTENOFF” gets you another 10% off. Expires today.

That code does not work for me today. Where did you get the code from?

Jim

Each time I’ve signed into eBay this past few days, it has given me a banner across the the top of the page giving the code. The auction itself even prompted me to use the code to get it for $49.05, so I ordered another two batteries and the total came to $98.10. Maybe it was specific for my account, but it didn’t give me that impression. Sorry it didn’t work for you! :(

Edit: The code given by eBay was all upper case and may be case sensitive. I just noticed the code I gave should have both of the “f’s” in capitals also. My mistake, but may still not be the issue for not working for you. In any case, I just corrected the code to show all capitals.

That code was specific to your account. Ebay rarely has sitewide coupons anymore.

That is what I found out yesterday.

I ordered one of these batteries for myself before the guy ran out again.

Like you said, there was a banner at the top of the ebay page that said I had $5.00 of any purchase of $5.01 or higher. It was not a 10 percent off coupon code, just a straight $5.00 of coupon code, so I used it, which brought the price down to basically the same thing that you paid. I ended up paying $49.50.

I thought that maybe I could use the $5.00 of coupon code that I saw, plus the 10 percent off coupon code you posted, which would have brought the price down to $44.55 for the battery. Which would have been an absolute steal!

But, even at $49.50 for the battery, that is still a steal for these XCP 4.0Ah Lithium Ion batteries!

I have 14 C3 tools in my collection, that I have purchased over the last 15 years, starting with a drill, and I love them. I have all Lithium Ion batteries for them, and the XCP batteries make all the tools function better and for longer periods of time!

Thanks to everyone who posted about buying these batteries from the ebay guy!

I was going to start a different thread, but seeing this thread, I think it is appropriate...

Anyone notice or have this funny feeling these craftsman 19.2V tools are getting to be the step child ? Haven't seen any selection of them like they used to....

Sears has really slimmed down the variety over these past few years, and availability really depends on when they pay their vendor. Occasionally you will see some individual tools come in-stock and if it's something you want you better jump on it sooner rather than later as it's usually pretty limited quantity.

This isn’t really news. C3 has finished. The last new tool debuted back in 2014. A few tools remain in production, but won’t be much longer.

What is your source of information? What should we do with the new C3 tools that were introduced in the years later than 2014?

Everything I could find says that the tools are still in production and new tools are still being developed.
