I'm not sure if this guy qualifies as "vintage" or not, but I'm hoping someone will help me determine the approximate date of manufacture. It's a made-in-Taiwan Craftsman belt sander + disc sander. I bought it from a guy who did a lot of knifemaking with it. Ran very strong but was ready for bearings.

I will post complete pictures of my actual unit, but right now it is all in pieces!

In the meantime, heres a picture from an old eBay ad of an identical unit:

I tore the motor down tonight to address a rattly bearing. It took 6203's just like a block grinder. The original bearings were Nachi so I take that as a positive sign of overall build quality.

It has some more similarities with the old Block grinders, but the stator size and primary coil wire diameter are somewhat smaller than my 70's made 1HP Block.

In general I am pretty impressed with this sander. The belt sander housing and work table are heavy cast iron. The whole unit weighs 65 pounds!

How old would you guess this sander is? Late 90's perhaps?
Yes probably mid/late 90s. Looks an awful lot like a date I have the 6-in belt maybe about an 8 in disc similar to that its been a fine machine.

Another resurrection of this thread. My unit just died, motor went to ground. Seems that new motors are unavailable. If someone has a working motor I'd be a buyer. This has been a valuable shop tool for the last 20+ years.
The current Jet tool looks like a duplicate for those needing parts.

I almost bought another one several weeks ago, but considering the state of my garage I decided against it. Perhaps a regular grinder from the same era is similar?

I have also attached the images of the front and rear of the idler pulley and bearings. The front view shows just the end of the shaft, and is what you see when you remove the dust enclosure, with the snap ring removed.

I don't know if the naming convention has changed in the last thirty or so years but I recently bought a 351.22638 Sears Craftsman 42" x 2" 1 hp belt sander. One of the bearings was suspect, so just ordered a set of 4 Nachi 6202ZZE bearings as the "ZZ" means metal protection on both sides of the bearing. Which is what my bearings look like. The photo is from my machine and only shows 1 "Z" on the name, I hope I've done the right thing?

Personal preference would be to get -2R bearings instead (rubber seals on both sides). They will outlast the metal "shielded" bearings. The metal ones has a little less drag which may be why they were spec'ed, but I can't imagine it matters much.

A 6202 is an extremely common bearing spec, and manufacturers play games with the suffixes, so your "ZZ" one's will probably be fine too.

On my original photo from the Craftsman belt sander showed a Nachi 6202ZE yet these original bearings were metal shielded on both sides! That's why I think that the nomenclature seems to me to have changed. JZiggy you could be 100% right that a 6202 -2RS (or -2R) might work fine. I just replaced what I had so it would give me a few years of sanding for small CNC Plasma cutting shop that I hope to open at some stage in the future.

I'm grateful for finding a forum that had some insight on these belt sanders

@JZiggy the spring that keeps the tension on the 2" x 42" belt . If you pull the lever one way it takes the tension off the belt and you can then swap out the belt. If it's left in the normal position it keeps the vertical 2" belt tight.
