I recently purchased an open box intermediate drawer from sears. There was not any damage to the box and the price was right; so why not. There were two pieces of MDF laying on top of the drawer inside of the box. On the under side of the box there is recessed and the four legs/feet protrude from there. Measuring the area, and the pieces of wood would fit very, very tightly. In theory, the weight is dispersed to the edges so the wood pieces would not be needed. Do I have to get the pieces of wood to fit or can I leave them out? I just do not want to find out I should have put them in later.

You should not use the mdf between the boxes (bottom/intermediate/top). The MDF is supposed to be used as a work top if you decide not to buy/use a top box. There usually is a tag or piece of paper saying something like this.

(I have that intermediate drawer).

Thanks, I know the pieces is not suppose to be used on top. It seems weird that there are two pieces of wood, and a recessed space underneath.

Why not? I left it on top of my 40" roll cab, how could it matter? :headscrat

When I bought my 40" 20 plus years ago the bottom came with a piece of MDF to use as a work surface. I did not use it because I also bought the top box. The MDF is thick and I was afraid the top box would slide off the bottom box. Instead I put a 1/8" thick stair runner on the top of the bottom box to protect it from the top box.

Yea, I can see that. I never move mine so I would not have thought of that.
