Craftsman 41 piece Screwdriver Set

I have a similar craftsman set that I bought 20 years ago. I like it. Has worked well over the years.

Would like some more screwdrivers. Is this set any good? Has anyone bought this recently? Thanks.

I would say for the money there are better sets. A lot of people like the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh Professional screwdrivers and Tekton screwdrivers.

I have the Pittsburgh bolstered screwdrivers which I like as well.

I've owned those screwdrivers before, and they were pretty much my least favorite screwdrivers in the drawer (which also included Husky, Dewalt, and Matco). I eventually got rid of all of them, by giving them away to my son.

The tips never hold up in my experience.

I liked the well made cman professional screwdriver series, so of course they had to stop selling them.

Harbor freight professional screwdrivers much better.

I've owned those screwdrivers before, and they were pretty much my least favorite screwdrivers in the drawer (which also included Husky, Dewalt, and Matco). I eventually got rid of all of them, by giving them away to my son.

Ironically, Husky screwdrivers are made by the same, exact company (Western Forge) and are nearly identical. Also, Dewalt (Stanley) is a customer of Pratt Read, a subsidiary of Ideal Industries, along with Western Forge. For all we know, they are all made side by side in the same facility. They also make stuff for Snap On, Klein, amd other Danaher brands like Armstrong, Allen, KD, etc. Pratt Reads facility is about 5 minutes away from me in Shelton, CT.

Like the op i have an old set of c man along with snap on witte pratt reed sk. The set mentioned likely is not the quality of us made nor is harbor freight or any other asian sourced.sears still sells craftsman professional sets also tekton screwdrivers as of now are us made by wilde i looked at those for my son they are available thru amazon or if u have a M e i j e r store around they carry the brand.my favorite screwdrivers are witte made in germany which are branded matco.i bought from the truck but today can be bought at home depot they are the most durable have the best tips and i used them everyday in an industrial maintenance/electrical job.the max pro line is very affordable i think in the 30-40 price range.

Honestly, they will work but they aren't that good. The tips are fairly soft and tend to strip out if you ever come out of a screw head when torquing, if you use them a lot, or if you use them on too rusty of a fastener. As a DIY guy I couldn't justify over $100 on a set of basic phillips/flats from the best quality so I picked up a set of $45 Williams drivers that had the 8 most common sizes and then got a similar set from Sears when it hit half off and I had some points to burn. This gave me some inexpensive paint stirrers, paint can openers, and a few odd sizes to have on hand for the occasional times my basic Williams set won't cover it.

I'm in the market for new screwdrivers as well. Check out the Tekton set on Amazon for $50. Has excellent reviews. For less money, I would go with HF Pittsburgh Pro. Have heard a lot of good comments about them. For more money, check out Wera; very highly regarded, but not cheap.

I've got several hundred screwdrivers scattered about, but one of my favorites that I tend to use the most actually cost among the least: Eastwood

I bought the set after they won the "Screwdriver Shootout" in Truckin Magazine, and they are awesome for the price---around $20 for the set!

How much are they? They work ok, no one will be robbing you, Sears cant make a nickel on tools as it is.

I thought about refilling my old/lost drivers by buying another set of these but I remember how the top three or so Philips are never ever used by me for anything... or is it that they are actually sized wrong? In other words, in my set, even with large fasteners, I've never actually found one that fit.

I know I've bent a few tips on the flats of my old USA ones so I don't know that I want to take the chance on the newer Chinese sourced ones.

Just happened to look at the $9.99 Harbor Freight set today and I'm surprised by the apparent quality. I might spring for a set and see how they go.

Those are not very good screwdrivers. I'd spend a little more and get some SK, Williams, new old stock Vaco, etc.. Or even the HF Pro ones or Tekton.

I'm not one to rag on Craftsman as I think it's generally pretty good stuff for the DIY'er. That being said I own this exact set (made in USA). I've never broken a tip or anything like that but they are without a doubt the most uncomfortable handles I've ever used. I picked up the Craftsman Industrial soft grip and they are outstanding. I also have a HF Pittsburgh Pro set in my travel box and they are nice.

Tekton's are pretty good, and that set is less than $35.00 from Amazon...

Their warranty is "Take a photo of broken tool, email it to us, and we'll FedEx you a replacement..."...And that, Bubba, ain't too shabby for a warranty!!!...

The phillips tips are horrible (never had a problem with the Torx, and I maybe used a flat head once or twice a year, so can't remember struggling with those either). I did use the phillips regularly and had 3 of the Phillips 2 so that when the first P2 head was too damaged during a job, I could switch to my 2nd P2, and then also still have a backup if that tip got damaged too. Then I would warrant them so I would have 3 new ones and repeated the process a few times.

I switched to Wiha, and have been using the same P2 for a few years now.

So yeah, those craftsman phillips screwdrivers are horrid. I do like Tekton's USA made set as far as budget screwdrivers go!

You have to give them credit though...it CAN'T be easy to make screwdrivers out of cheese.

You can still find some USA made Craftsman sets in the stores. I also saw some on the Sears Outlet site last week. I generally lose screwdrivers and often buy a set when I see something I like. I ike the Craftsman drivers and I've never had one fail for any reason and I've beat on them and used them as levers. It may be because all of mine have been older USA made models or I may have just been lucky. The one complaint I've had about Craftsman is the coating on the shaft. It's described as nickel, but it sure doesn't offer much protection. I had a never opened set in the garage and the coating dulled and rust spots were starting to form. Nearly every driver brand I've seen, even the low cost brands have had better protection on the shafts. I've also purchased some other brands in the past 6 years. I have one of the Eastwood $19 sets that won the Truckin Magazine test. Very nice finish and so far they have been very good drivers. I won a set of Jeg's branded drivers at a race. They are OK, but not my favorites and I have not used them enough to make an observation. I bought some Kobalts that happened to be USA made. They have been very good, better then the Cman and much better then the Jeg's branded stuff. I have some Klein drivers from when I did electrical work. I highly recommend them. My oldest is nearly 40 years old and still looks good. I have some Stanley's that look and feel good, but I had the shaft on a Stanley actually twist. Not in the handle, the steel shaft actually twisted. Since then I've avoided them entirely.

I have several of the clear handle screwdrivers, once the handle starts to deteriorate, they smell bad, Some time ago, I began a replacement program, and now prefer my hard handle SnapOn drivers

The Tekton 12 pc set is $35 at Meijer food stores. I looked at them and was not impressed. The handles look like shrunken fruit, and felt oily. The blades are just black oxide finish, no bolsters, and the tips seem no different than the CM screwdrivers everyone is complaining about. I don't understand the fuss over them...
