I've owned two of these top and bottom combos for nearly two years and love them! The majority of the reviews are 4 and 5 stars with exception of the clueless that claim these are not real stainless because a magnet sticks to them. And mine have yet to show any signs of rust. I'm not understanding how anything can rust when sealed in clear coat?

That said, I would buy again in a heartbeat, but I definitely would only purchase if store pickup we're available and I could inspect at time of pickup. These boxes seem to damage extremely easy during shipping. When I purchased mine it took two and three attempts to get an undamaged one on all but one of the top boxes. I felt sorry for the guys working there and having to keep bringing out new boxes for me to inspect before finding undamaged ones. Fortunately the guys were cool and completely understood. I also wouldn't purchase for professional use. They are fine for home use, but the clear coat does scratch easily. I take care of my stuff, so I'm careful when removing and replacing tools. I was that way with my prior painted boxes as well. Painted boxes scratch too!

I used to have that setup, and paid a grand for it. Kinda flimsy filled up, but a lot of storage for the money. Definitely not real stainless though.

I had the exect same problem with my black boxes. The top box was fine, but I had to take the bottom box back three damn time!!! ounce I got a good set of boxes, I have enjoyed these boxes without any problems

I couldn't find a bottom so I picked up two tops that I found after work. Everywhere is out of stock. It is going to bug me for the rest of my life not having the bottom but at least I got some much needed storage. For now I just cleared off some shelves and put it on there.

The quality is really good and it is huge! My son said it is not big enough for his tools.

I'm not positive, but I believe this discontinued 41" top may fit perfectly on top of the new 40" Cman stainless bottom that just came out a few months ago to replace these models. The drawer handles are different, and the stainless itself seems to have a little more texture to it, but if exact cosmetic match is not a must, it might be worth considering mixing the two. At least at this killer deal anyway! Just a suggestion for those who are unable to get both top and bottom on this deal.

Edit: I just checked Sears site and they're stating the new 40" model is actually 40.5", so I may be wrong on this match up. I only believed they may be the same because my 8 drawer top box was always listed as a 40", but in reality was actually 41" and fit perfectly on my 41" bottom cabinet. I think I would confirm in store and measure for myself on this one.

Those shelves are going to get really heavy once you start loading tools in those boxes. I have a similar setup (but with smaller chests) on my metal shelves. The shelves I have against a concrete wall. What I did was fasten 2x4's vertically with anchors to the wall, floor to ceiling for the frames. Then anchored more 2x4's horizontally to the wall to line up with the shelves. Then fastened the entire shelving unit (frames and shelves) to the 2x4's with heavy duty wood screws. Basically looks like a letter H of 2x4's anchored to the wall, then the shelves pushed up against the H and fastened down. Otherwise, if the shelves are just free standing units, the entire thing might collapse or topple over under all the weight of the boxes and tools.

This shelving unit is very high quality. I think each shelf takes around 400 pounds at the minimum. But because I took out some shelves I do have some more side to side movement I need to address.

Rust would indicate a poor job of the clear coat application. One review stated that on his box, the clear coat was flaking.
A change in production workers, the source of the clear coat, or the environment in which it is applied could easily be responsible for a drop in finish quality...
May not be a bad idea to give those boxes a wax and polish job for extra protection....

You are not alone in your experience with shipping damage. I read similar reports on this Craftsman set...
Home Depot in Bemidji, Mn had 13 Husky 40" chest+roller combos on the display floor.. Only one had survived the wreck.. This isn't just a Craftsman problem with damages. It is widespread... Pays to check things over before leaving the store...

Thanks for clarifying the fitment of the two sizes. My original bottom stainless boxes don't have that ridge around the top, and both top and bottom boxes fit completely flush with each other on the sides. They have bolt-on angle brackets on the rear corners to lock the top box in place. I knew both the old and new painted versions had the ridge, but I wasn't aware that they added it to the new stainless models?

No joy for these locally. I talked to one guy, and he said they found 4 tucked in a corner. They put them out and within days they were gone.

I wish there were some black full length tops on clearance or even the mid box on clearance. I'm frustrated with not having a full length drawer.

I stopped by my local sears today and found one bottom and two tops plus three of those 52" inch tops. The bottom and top were both marked more than what they are showing online, Sears has always priced matched their website though.

When I checked the sears website it said there was none in stock anywhere around me.

So it may be worth stopping by your local store to check the clearance section.

BTW there are lots of different stainless steels that are magnetic.

Agreed! My magnet sticks to every stainless knife and kitchen untensil I own. It even sticks to the real stainless trim on my '71 El Camino! I have no way of knowing for sure if these boxes are actually stainless or not, but using the magnet test doesn't prove a thing. Until someone can provide a better method of proof, I'll continue to believe that they are actually stainless as claimed.

After a lot of hard work and drama I finally found a bottom! It took me several hours of phone calls while driving back in town from work. I called every Sears and Sears Hometown in 100 mile radius. And when I did finally find a display model they would not honor the online price! It took a lot of back and forth with my local store and the store a hour away from me to buy it at my store which would price match and then drive a hour away to pick it up.

So total time invested to get the bottom was around 4 hours of work. I didn't really get lucky, it took a lot of phone calls and leg work to get one.

Now I got a beat up box with a missing key that needs some TLC to match the new in box top. I will post some pictures to try and get some advice on how to fix it.

There was an episode on wheels and deals where they used a buffer and an electric drill with a round bristle attachment to make the lines you normally see on stainless steel. The guy was working on a Delorian. As for the rust, it looks like a weld spot rusted? can't tell, maybe fine steel wool?

That is funny you said that because I was thinking of the same episode of Wheeler Dealers when I was trying to work it out in my mind.

Not sure what type of clear coat I should use that would match the rest. I really don't want to do the whole thing.

I don't think they really cared about damage. They just thought it was not possible to fit in my car. I would be more pissed if they wouldn't load it then if they damaged my car. When I do things like this I expect damage.

Any thoughts on using Rustoleum Wheel Clear Coat to fix my scratches? I will sand down to the metal and can spray this on it. I figure because it is made for wheels it may stick the the stainless better and hopefully be thicker.

But I have an idea maybe if you take off the casters, take off the lid off of one of the tops, and place that top chest without the lid in the middle of the other two you could have a 21 drawer chest, just bolt all three together, I know it will be a little tall but it could be done since your will probably never find another bottom....

That would be super tall and I don't think some of the top drawers would be usable. I'm 5'9 and the top of my normal stack with the casters on it is probably around chin level.
