I wouldn't worry about the top part of the bottom chest, aren't you going to put one of the top chest on it?

But I have an idea maybe if you take off the casters, take off the lid off of one of the tops, and place that top chest without the lid in the middle of the other two you could have a 21 drawer chest, just bolt all three together, I know it will be a little tall but it could be done since your will probably never find another bottom....

Actually, a pretty cool chest could have been made out of just the two tops alone using elronin's idea, but excluding the bottom cabinet altogether. If you have a welder, a rolling stand could be made for perfect height and mobility. A cabinet with just 10 full width drawers would be cool! I don't need more tool storage, but a little creativity using just the top chests sounds like a fun project. Too bad there's none available in my area!

That would be super tall and I don't think some of the top drawers would be usable. I'm 5'9 and the top of my normal stack with the casters on it is probably around chin level.

That's true, taking off the casters would only save you 6 o 7 inches. My 40 inch Husky is 10 drawers, and with the casters the top lid is around my chin too. I'm 5'9" also.

I've owned two of these top and bottom combos for nearly two years and love them! The majority of the reviews are 4 and 5 stars with exception of the clueless that claim these are not real stainless because a magnet sticks to them. And mine have yet to show any signs of rust. I'm not understanding how anything can rust when sealed in clear coat?

That said, I would buy again in a heartbeat, but I definitely would only purchase if store pickup we're available and I could inspect at time of pickup. These boxes seem to damage extremely easy during shipping. When I purchased mine it took two and three attempts to get an undamaged one on all but one of the top boxes. I felt sorry for the guys working there and having to keep bringing out new boxes for me to inspect before finding undamaged ones. Fortunately the guys were cool and completely understood. I also wouldn't purchase for professional use. They are fine for home use, but the clear coat does scratch easily. I take care of my stuff, so I'm careful when removing and replacing tools. I was that way with my prior painted boxes as well. Painted boxes scratch too!

Ive had mine as well for 2 years…no problems!

went in today to pick up the 41" top and ended up leaving with the 52" 9 drawer top for only $280! Thanks to this thread that lead me to that deal!

Talked to the guy a while, the 41" is on sale because all the new ones are 40". the 41" top will not fit on the 40" bottom cabinets unless you grind down the little ridges that come up on the sides and back of the bottom cabinet. Still a steal of a price for the top of a work bench, just worth mentioning.

wow….which one?

Online says nothing available. But I went over to my local Sears to have a look.

They had one sitting out in a Clearance pile (looked like a floor model or customer return with some light scratches). I asked "how much", they said it's on clearance, and is marked down to $429.97! I said it is a Hot Buy online. They said "no problem, we'll price match!" They said "How much is it online?" I said $191.67. They looked at me funny and said "That can't be...." I said it was, so they went over to a PC connected to the internet and looked and verified the price. They went in the back to get a Manager. About 20 minutes later came out and said the used one on the floor was a customer return, and since the price ends with a "7" they can't discount it any further because it isn't the same as the one online. I said that it is the same one. They looked again and said. "The one online is NEW, this one is not NEW, so it is different. If we had a NEW one, we could honor the price." I said that doesn't make any sense, you are telling me a NEW one is $191.67, but a USED one is $439.97?" After another 10 minute runaround, they said "let me check in the back". They came back 15 minutes later and said "Great news, we have one in the back", so they got another manager. 10 minutes later, they said "Sorry, we can't sell it for that price, it is internet only." At that point I said, "Thanks for trying, I have to get back to work because this is my lunch break, and I've already been here almost an hour". As I walked out they called me back and said they would work something out. So after another 15 minutes huddle between the associate and two managers they said "We'll work a great deal out for you.... Only $299 for the box!" I said "So you won't match the internet price?" They said "Sorry...."

So I walked out with money in my pocket. I might go run over to the other Sears near me.

Basically, my local Sears has two of these. One new in the box, and one floor model on the floor. The stock on the internet says none available, and they won't price match.

So I guess it is a YMMV.

Call in to customer service and explain the situation. Maybe if they realize that the store has one in stock, they can process an order there...

Earlier I PM you my phone number to call me because I was driving and couldn't type but I can tell you how to do it now. Go to a friendly Sears store and ask to do purchase transfer or something like that. I don't recall the term they used. But what you do is buy at the Sears that will match the price and pick up at the other Sears. They can do it even if it does not show in inventory. They just can call to verify that they have it. It then sends a note in the system that it is sold and they will put it in the back. You go to merchandise pickup with the receipt and get it. If you have any trouble get a Sears card and purchase over the phone from my local Sears. I can help you if you need it.

That is a good idea, but it would take some work to do. I would have to drill out a lot of rivets that holds the lid on. Plus with the lid removed the dimensions are smaller under the lid. The other downside would be loosing that top. It is very **** with that huge Craftsman logo. I want to keep the top open just to see that!

I don't care about the top of the lower cart. I will use it as a test bench for fixing the issues. After I work out a good technique I will carry it over to the parts that will be visible.

Got mine home. They had to over ride the price as it was the normal price in the store. No questions asked.

I went to my local sears with sears app in hand and showed one of the workers the price. He said yea, we can match it. Although i believe the newer ones are 40" the only one they had there were the new ones. No old style. I still asked but it showed -1 in system lol. Darn.

ill check a few other stores.

I've got a stainless box. It was my first real expensive shop purchase over 10 years ago. It's great except for how well it shows even minor fingerprints. I'm curious to hear if the finish on these craftsman is the same way or if they stay fingerprint free...can anyone fill me in?

Have the referenced Craftsman set and the clear coat nicely prevents fingerprints. Am really happy with it. Would not have bought it without the clear coat.

Just did a 3 hour round trip to pick these up. The chest turned out to be a display unit so they knocked another $65 off the tag! Total was about $400 plus 10% cash back from shop discover. Slick!

You got lucky, they would not give me any extra off. They just said it is clearance and it is not suppose to be in good shape. I told him that is not correct because I buy new in box clearance all the time. Anyway they wouldn't budge. This is the same store that I had to go to another store to buy it and pick it up there.

I thought I was missing keys too. But I found one. Here is a picture showing where I found it hidden. After I took out all the drawers there it was hanging in the back.

So I started to repair my display model. I tested using the top which will be covered up. One test was very aggressive using a brass wire brush wheel and the other was just using 600 and 1000 grit sandpaper.

Then end result is light is right. Try to get the scratch out using the finest sandpaper and avoid going down to the metal if possible. Actually even if the scratch won't come out all the way without going to the metal you may be better off stopping before you make it all the way. Because when the clear coat goes on it will never match if you go down to the metal. The only way would be to do that whole section so it matches.

The rust spot was just discoloration of the clear coat. Something was in it when it was sprayed that rusted or something but it was not the metal itself.

Tomorrow I will spray the side after I see how the top comes out after it dries. More pictures in next post.

Here is how it looks before and after spraying the clear. You can see it will blend well if you just sand lightly. Just try to avoid going down to the metal and you will be fine.

Glad the wire brush worked looks good:beer:

I gave it a shot but it is a bit too much for this application. You would have to do the whole thing to make it look good. But it does a good job if you don't want to blend.

I found the key to the bottom box in one of the drawers, I already ordered a new key from ebay for the top. Im gonna take out a top drawer and see if I wasted $5.:lol_hitti

Check that pocket in the top too. The one with the big Craftsman logo when you open it up.

The top of my bottom box was scratched up pretty good because they never bolted the top to the bottom so it kept sliding around when they moved it in the store I guess. One my fixed wheels was so tight I couldnt turn the wheel by hand, I had to get my 15" ratchet just to break loose the "axel" bolt. Once I loosened it a few turns it was good to go.

I am jealous also....Do not need one as I just bought 2 - 46" Masterforce at Menards and a 32" SS Husky at Home Depot. I tried but none in my area.

Enjoy your great finds....
