I picked up this Columbian made Craftsman vise for $25 the other day from a local pawn shop. Jaws are perfect, paint is pretty darn good. It saw very little use. Its got 4" jaws with a 6" opening, which was an improvement over my Record vise. I'm guessing its early 70s, but does anyone know for sure? The 72-73 Sears catalog has similar model numbers, but they had letter suffixes which this one does not have. The 68 catalog had a 3" and 5" vise listed, but not a 4".

The 4" was only made for a short time, it's slightly more rare than the 3.5" and 5" versions. IIRC, it was made in the USA. I have a couple 3.5", one 4" and a couple 5" and some are US, some are Japan.

The "70's" might be as close as it is going to get......then someone comes along and posts the definitive answer...

Craftsman 4" bench vise w/ swivel base model #506.5188 circa 1970.

Made under license in USA by The Columbian Vise & Manufacturing Company. Original paint in great condition for being 40+ years old. Not the industrial beast that some of you guys have but this little guy fits my little workbench and my little workshop just fine. My dad managed his entire adult life with a 3 1/2" Wilton so I don't think this will be a hindrance. And if I ever need a bigger vise I have the collective knowledge of GJ to point me in the right direction!

If l could interject a question.
This one is on the auction site,
how hard to repair this crack in the base.
it from the edge to the slot, so it cant spread.
I'm not too good of a welder,
I have a small torch set, I've seen vises braised.
Would it be hard to repair that with brass?
Something like that to braise, would I V it out, then get my base metal almost ready to melt, and then fill in with the brass.
Thanks.
Sorry for the thread jack OP
