I have an old 3.5 craftsman 506 vice that i picked up for $5.....and would you know it? After looking at all the nice vise threads here i got fired up to clean it up, strip it, prime and paint and mount it.

I am just in from pulling it all apart. I think this one is from the mid 60s or 70s. No Japan stamped on the base anywhere.

It was red in its day. I am wondering i anyone has redone one of these and what color red good to use here? Do i want satin for a dull finish or gloss for a bright one? What shade of red looks best? Yes.....i realize it is a vise and "who cares?" but at the same time i might as well do it justice while i have it apart and cleaned.

IF you have one, lets see it. Also......any recommendations on shade of red would be great.

Glad i found this forum. LOTS of good stuff here.

I recently got one them too but not for $5.00 but just slightly more :D And unless mine is really faded bad its nowhere near as bright a red as a later Jap one I also have. The Rustoleum Sunrise Red matches that just right.

The Rustoleum product easily matches up with the later 391.xxxx

Now I just looked closer at the 506 flipped it over and the paint on the lower back of the base and the paint on the underside being much brighter and cleaner than what is seen on top also looks the same to me as what is on the 391. Not the greatest photo but here is the 391 is on the left and the turned over 506 is on the right. You can judge for yourself

Thanks for posting the pictures. I appreciate it. Next time im near the big box store i am going to grab a can of self that self etching primer they make and some of the Sunrise Red.

It is supposed to get down into the middle 40s next week. Not the best for stripping and painting things.
