Does the spindle nut on a 51871 have the slanty end toward the dynamic jaw or facing away from the static jaw? I attached a picture below (gjv2.jpg) that shows the nut (spindle nut.jpg) in both orientations, the nut will fit both ways so that is why I am asking.

The bottom bolt had fallen out of this vise so I never got to see the OE orientation of said spindle nut.

The board here has been super helpful, I am doing my first vise resto and the info in the threads on this site has been invaluable. Thanks guys.

BONUS Question*****- Paint the vise slide (like in the vise pic attached, or leave her bare metal? My vise appeared to have some paint on the slide but not sure if it was factory. GJ is divisive on whether or not to paint the vise slide

I think (?) The slanted end goes forward. Been a while since u had one of those.

The slides were originally painted. It was super tough paint but would still wear off. I prefer not to paint a slide, ever, even if it was factory painted.

Here are a couple pics of how mine is. I included a pic of the bolt which might answer your question about it. Mine has a shoulder bolt.

I see so the vertical end faces the dynamic jaw. I will try it that way. Mine screws right into the main nut so its slightly different, thanks for sharing the pics
