Hello all,

I recently picked up a Craftsman 5242 bench vise at an antique gallery for a paltry $10.00. Looks to be in nice shape but needs to come apart for proper wire brushing etc. If anyone knows the secret to taking this thing apart I'd greatly appreciate some guidance. :)

Thanks much,

RUT

Let's see it! Sounds like it may be a "made for Craftsman by Reed" vise...

They're not hard to get apart assuming it's not rusted together.

Dave,

No, it's not rusted together at all.... moves freely. So, what's the secret?

Actually, it's much simpler than that one, and it's now completely apart. Once I realized there was nothing stopping it from unscrewing into two pieces, that left only a collet with a set screw to complete the separation. Guess this is one of the easy ones!

Thanks much,

It might be misssing the retainer ring on the end. Some vices don't have one. Some have a pin.

Actually, it doesn't have a retainer ring or a pin.... just the aforementioned collet holding the screw into the moveable section. I suspect this wasn't the top of the line as far as quality goes but for the money I can't go wrong.
