I've been kick'n the idea around about picking up a tap and die set. The price on this Craftsman set made me "settle" for this set. The taps and dies seem ok, but the tap and die wrenches ****. But, for how much I plan to use it...well, IMO $100 bucks isn't bad for a starter set.

The 75 piece GearWrench set is 1/3 more $$$ but comes with way better tap/die wrenches. It's hard to tell by the pictures, but the taps, dies and case look the same in the GearWrench / Craftsman tap and die sets.

Before somebody asks... yes, China. :)

I need a set. Been considering the USA-made Irwin/Hanson set for about 2.5x as much. This is tempting, especially for how little I will use it.

That, a coupla good tap handles and pipe taps along w/a rethreading set would pretty much cover the basics.......

If you are wanting USA made and reasonable, search Ebay. There is plenty of excellent condition to like new older USA Craftsman "Kromedge" sets to be had at a reasonable price.

Second the notion. I am fairly sure the old Kromedge are HSS and are USA made. I picked up a 28 piece set off eBay for about $30 including shipping not too long ago. There are a couple larger size sets, and can be had in the $100 price range.
