What's the use case for these?

I heard you like sockets...so let's stack sockets on sockets?

I'm not sure the purpose of these. It looks like you put a box end wrench on them, to convert it to a ratchet.

But why not just put the box end wrench on the nut/bolt, or just use a regular ratchet?

Seems like an idea Sears/Craftsman implemented that didn't pan out, thus almost 7 thousand of them flooding the Outlets.

You put them into a ratcheting wrench for a low profile ratcheting socket. Slightly lower than a ratchet with a socket.

Interesting. For those times you can't get a regular wrench on a nut or bolt and clearance issues don't allow a regular socket and ratchet to fit either. Kind of the same low profile as a pass-thru socket set

Why not just use the ratcheting wrench you are putting these into...? :dunno:

Use case: For slightly recessed fasteners. The same use case where you would use an offset box end wrench.

With 5 degree ratcheting you might be able to work a recessed nut that has obstructions above and to the sides, where no other tool would fit or have a swing. But it would have to be a very specific situation where a pass-through or shallow (true shallow, not 'standard') socket wouldn't work.

Have you been talking to my wife? She says that A LOT.:eyecrazy:

Hmmmmm:
1. super shiny and polished
2. reads Craftsman on them
3. look fantastic in the Craftsman tool box
4. complements the Ernst socket rail wonderfully

And a huge FREE bonus ----- they turn stuff.

These were clearanced out in stores about 2-3 years ago. I picked up both metric and standard for less than $10 total. All USA too. I've probably used these less than 10 times for reasons stated in previous posts.

I see my thread on the ultimate socket set is now spawning others. I'd like to pick up a metric set as well if anyone has one.

And the price will be different at Kmart.com too. And at Searsoulet.com.

Which is while I'll be surprised if Sears still exists in two years.

I can see rare cases where these Craftsmans would be useful. Last year I had to reach some nuts and bolts to break loose and remove a rear engine mount. The mount was blocked by the steering rack, and manual called for "dropping the rack". Forget about that.... You needed more height to get around the rack than you had with a standard wrench, but a regular ratchet and socket was to high and wouldn't fit either. You needed something in-between those two sizes to access the nuts and bolts.

I wound up buying this very slim profile ratchet from Harbor Freight. I used that with a normal socket and just made it. But I could see the Craftsman specialty sockets would have also probably worked just as well, if not better. So I guess if/when a Metric set comes up, I might get a set.
