Sometimes use with easy outs, especially the very large sizes. in restricted areas the 8 point sockets require less room than the Lisle tap drivers.

Those square head "bolts" in beam clamps and bridge clamps aren't exactly bolts, but rather cup point set screws. It's why the head across the flats is the same as the diameter.

Recently picked up an older Hinsdale socket set and it had a full range of square sockets.

You can use a 3/8” 12pt socket on the Fullman style ones. I have been doing it for decades…

Since I only use that socket for set screws, I should find a 4 or 8pt socket for them.

A lot of the nuts for stove bolts were square until fairly recently. Old 1/4" sets came with a couple of the common 8pts. Timber bolts and lag bolts were square headed, too. In industry, machine alignment frequently uses long square headed set screws. A 1/2" 8pt on a long handled ratchet beats using a 15" crescent wrench one flat at a time. A 1/2" combination wrenches are sprung on the first attempt to move that gearbox or big electric motor.

Did craftsman ever make metric 8 point sockets? They seem like hens teeth these days, only ever see SAE 8 point sockets. I could swear I’ve seen some craftsman metric 8pt back in the day. Don’t even know if there’s any 8 pt metric fasteners!
